I read to put DD on her back until 6 months for SIDS prevention but this morning my mom put her on her stomach and she slept so very soundly for much longer than usual. I'm afraid to put her on her stomach regularly. How long did you put DC on their back to sleep before letting them sleep how they want?
Re: How long did you put DC on their back to sleep?
um, well never.
All of my girls have been side sleepers from day 1.
They slept that way until they were old enough to flip flop around however they wanted. Once they can roll and lift and move their heads around well, the chance of SIDS goes down.
Course, Samantha sleeps with a fuzzy blanket, pulled up to her face and has since she was about 2-3m old... She slept better with it, so I was okay with it. lol *shrug*
Originally we alternated side-back-side, occasionally on his tummy, basically however he would stay down. Around 2 months I started putting him on his tummy all the time because it's the only way he'd actually stay asleep. Uh... I put a blanket on him and give him a stuffed animal too though so don't listen to me.
For what it's worth, everyone (including our pedi) comments on how lovely and round his head is!! No flat spots here.
I never put my kids to sleep on their stomachs. If they roll over that way, fine. But I will not put them down that way.
Before the back-to-sleep campaign, people put babies to sleep on their tummies because babies sleep better that way. But the theory is that they sleep a little too deeply that way and maybe it leads to SIDS.
Maybe that theory isn't true, but the SIDS rate has dropped since back-to-sleep started and I never felt it was worth the risk.
truitt was on his back forever, until he was old enough that it didn't matter
mathis has been a tummy sleeper since day 1. we had a respisense clip on breathing monitor that he wore and we all slept soundly. he stopped wearing the monitor at 6 mos when i sent it to a friend
We still do, but only because E slept okay on her back as an infant. She obviously rolls over to her tummy now.
I personally think you would be fine letting her sleep on her tummy---some kids are just tummy sleepers (=
BFP with no treatment!
For night-nights, he still goes on his back but for naps, we normally put him on his stomach because he'll actually take his nap that way. When he's done with his nap, he rolls over onto his back anyway.
We started the belly sleeping, supervised, quite early on. Or we'd have him on his side. he was really much happier and slept more that way.

This is our story. Lucas was on his back and swaddled in the beginning. Then, he was on his back until he could roll over.
Sean was a tummy sleeper since week 4. Swaddles were not for him and my resolve was broken easily on this with everything else going on.
As for knowing he's breathing, he has a flap of skin in his throat that vibrates when he breathes. We can hear him from downstairs even. I did not quit worrying about it until he could roll over.
**I don't advocate following our lead. I like Raykit10's monitor. That would have given us peace of mind.
