Childbirth Classes

I need some opinions on childbirth classes. I am CPR certified, because I'm a student nurse assistant at Yale New Haven, and that just happens to be where I'm delivering. My midwife keeps asking me to look into the childbirth classes offered there, but after reading some post i see it was useless and a waste of time. I have no extra time in my day to be wasting away at Yale. I already waste away 12 hours there for 4 days a week! I was just wondering if anyone thinks its ABSOLOTLY NEEDED to take these classes, and if so, where was the classes that you had attended? Thanks again !

Re: Childbirth Classes

  • Hi,

We took the 6 week class (2hours/week) at Midstate and it was great!  It was a tough commitment (7-9 on a week night) but we got to meet other parents that were due around the same time, were able to digest the information, and have discussions with the nurses and other families.  They offer the class on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.  I would not suggest the 1 day class, I have not heard many good things about them.  There are a lot of on-line options if that fits better into your schedule, but for us it was more important to be with other people and be able to talk in person.

  • I was also considering the Yale classes but had second thoughts too. My friend's cousin is going through the classes and it sounds really helpful especially for first timers. And that's probably the only reason why I'd attend. Otherwise I doubt it's really necessary.

Has anyone heard of how good the "parenting" classes are at Yale? I'm wondering if I need a parenting class to tell me how to be a parent...?

I, too, would be interested in any feedback.

  • We ended up not taking childbirth classes at all and we did fine! The nurses will help you with any questions you have!
  • I have opted to skip the childbirth class.   I did take an infant care class and a breastfeeding class.  It was short, sweet and informative. However, I also rented some videos via netflix and they were just as good and perhaps even better.
  • I took classes but I was planning a natural birth and they really helped me, I took them through Birth Partners at St. Mary's in Waterbury. If you are planning a natural birth than I HIGHLY suggest you take classes but if your planning on taking pain medication than there is no need to take the class, when you need to do any breathing the nurses can help you control it. I took the infant care class and the breastfeeding class which I would also suggest everyone take. the infant care class was mostly stuff I knew but helpful none the less.
  • I made the decision to go without it, ill have alot of help in the room, and after talking to more moms who went to classes, they said its good info, but not needed. Thanks for the input :)
