My name is obviously Laci In which growing up as a little girl I was the only one. I hated that I could never get those pencils and things that had my name pre-made in it. LOL I know what a horrible thing
and also people pronounced my name Lassie a lot. Not being mean, they just thought it was how it was pronounced.
However, since high school I have LOVED my name. I love that there are not a ton of Laci's in the world.
That being said. My DH and I love two names. Bella has been our #1 from the beginning, however not being a Twilight fan (gasp I know) I had no idea it was from that movie. So now I still love it, however how many Bella's will there be once she gets to Kindergarten!
We came upon a name last week that is very unique called Adaleigh, pronounced Add-A-Lee. I love it, but it's VERY different and unique. Plus it has my middle name in it which is cool.
So we are torn between too popular or very unique!?
If you have your name picked out is it popular?

Re: What do you think of unique baby names?
I think it's pretty. I do like the name Bella, but it would be hard to use during the whole Twilight craze.
(BTW---I know two Lacy's....one is my best friend!)
Honestly, I'd probably go with Adaleigh. I think it's cute and unique. Especially since it's tied in with your name.
I am an "Audrey" and although it's a classic name, I too, never got a pencil with my name on it. BOO!
My husband was one of 6 boys in his class with the same name.
So while I wanted something unique, he said it really wasn't that bad not being unique.
I love Adaliegh...when I read it I thought it was pronounced "Ada-Lay" though.
The names we've chosen are WAAAY popular, but oh well.
Oooo I like it!!! Bella is pretty, but too popular right now.
I hear ya on the original names - I'm a Krista and couldn't find anything with my name on it unless it was special order. I also didn't meet another until I was in HS. We have chosen a name that is unusual here - Ciara was # 14 on the Irish list 2 years ago. We have to remind people how to spell/pronounce it, but once she gets rolling, it won't be a problem

If you do go with an uncommon name, DO NOT TELL ANYBODY.
Learn from me. I have received nothing but negativity from family and non-board friends over the name Xavier. It's not even that "unique". Hell, in 2006 it was in the 70's for popularity. So it's not like I made it up!
I think Adaleigh is pretty, but some people wont so DO NOT SHARE unless you want unsolicited nasty opinions.

You know I think it could be pronounced either way. My middle name is Leigh (lee) so I assume it's Ada-Lee. But a lot of people say Leigh as (Lay).
So I guess that will be one thing she has to contend with growing up
But I did see we could spell it Adalee as well which would be more easy to pronounce

I don't understand how people can be so mean. This already happened to me at work when Bella was our only contender. It's super popular but people were like OMG don't name your child that! I hate that name! I was thinking why can't you just smile and say ok? Why ask if you are going to be rude?
If I don't like a name someone picked out I don't tell them. If they are asking for advice and want opinions, I would just say something like it's nice but not my style! People are so harsh!!
I like Xavier

I know Adelaide is pretty popular right now, also Addison, which are sort of similar to Adaleigh.
So we orginally thought our name was orginal, but in reality it is not. We like Kaylee. We were at Babies R Us yestereday and checked to see if they had a personalized cup with her name on it. They did, which we like because, I always liked the items that had my name on it. I would rather have a different spelling like Caylee or Kayleigh, but DH thinks the common spelling would be easier on her.
My name is Heather, which was really popular when I was born, but going to school, I did not know any other heathers. Now in the work world I know several, but it doesn't really bother me.
I think there is a major trend to try and find a unique name, so the question is, is it unique or rare... that is what we are struggling with too.
We are personally huge fans of classic and traditional names. This isn't to say I hate unique names on other people's kids. . . it's just how we fall, you know?
I think the Addi- names are fairly popular right now and I KNOW Bella's in the top 10. . . but popular isn't necesarily bad (Hello pencil with your name on it - I only got one in my lifetime and it was special ordered). It's just a matter of whether or not you want your kid to have to go by Bella X(insert surname initial here) when she goes to school. I don't think there's anything wrong with those kids, though, you know?
My daughter is a Lillian. It's classic. My son is a Carter - a family name - and we struggled with it because Carter was pretty popular thanks to ER - we simply didn't want people thinking we named our kid after a TV character. This time our girl name is a family name and our boy name was chosen for its meaning and history. Our girl name is ranked about 800 (wow, really?) and our boy name is ranked in the 20s. We don't much care, kwim?

I thought the same. I know Leigh is pronounced Lee, but people also say it Lay so it might be confusing. I might spell it Adalee just to avoid confusion. It's very cute! I actually considered Adalynn for a girl. I like Bella too even though it's growing in popularity.
I personally like the name Bella.
But, I will tell you, being a teacher, I had 3 Bella's last year- One was just Bella, another was Isabella, and the other was Isabel, but went by Bella. Lot's of Bella's out there. I also know 3 families who have named their dogs Bella.
That being said, maybe it's a midwest thing.
I love Adaleigh, she might just have to do a little correcting when she gets older. But I don't think it's too big of a deal, but then again, my name is Emily, and I never, ever had to correct anyone.
