Dirty Diapers

Where are you putting yours?

I am thinking about skipping the Diaper Genie-model and just getting a small trashcan that I'll take out everyday (the shoot is just down the hall in my building). Is this practical or am I being naive on what the stink factor will be like.

Re: Dirty Diapers

  • We're just going with a Stainless Steel trash can with lid/foot pedal like you'd use in the kitchen.  I've heard as long as you have lid to keep the smells in you're good....and you don't have to waste money on all those diaper genie refills!

  • I am not spending money on an ugly diaper genie. I am just getting what the pp is- a SS trash can with a sturdy lid. I don't mind dumping the can out every day.

AMEN to this - and this was recommended in my baby class last night (but we already have registered for a simple stainless steel step can).

Frankly, I can't imagine waiting for a diaper genie to fill up and then finally emptying it.  I will be happy to take out stinky diapers at least once a day from my SS can.  =)

This.  We have been using a small stainless with lid/foot pedal since Madeline was born in March, it works great!  We just use plastic grocery/target bags in there and they work just fine!  No stink factor and we take it out about twice a week.

  • Same! I've heard the diaper disposal systems get a really bad odor in the "mouth" area where the diaper go before getting sealed in the actually machine.

I am just wondering as it sounds like you live in an apt complex or condo?... how often does trash pick-up?   I live in a town house and worry neigbhors can smell the garbage since it is out in our patio area. (no room in garage) and trask pick-up is only once a week.

It's a large building and the chute goes all the way to the basement where there are no apartments. I am not sure how often trash is removed from the premises, but it's a building of 106 units, so I can't imagine that our increased trash would cause that much more overall stink.

  • We're doing a genie or something like that. We live on the same property as DH's parents, and we use the same trash. It would be a hassle for us to take out trash everyday....otherwise, I'd just go for a SS can.

This is what we did ... it works perfectly ... then again, we cloth diaper but again, it works perfectly ... and because its not plastic, there's no lingering "funk"  ... no odors"stick" to the metal

We're doing a genie too.  I like the idea of a SS can, but the dumpster we need to put our trash in is not even close to nearby (we have to put trash in the trunk and drive it to the dumpster at the other side of the apt complex).

  • Genie's gross me out and I've been told/read that they are worthless.  We'll be getting a small SS trashcan for nursery, but most likely will throw the diapers out in the main trash in the garage once a day.

  • We have a diaper genie, only because DS's room is on the second floor, and no way am i going to empty it daily. Also, I like the fact that we can leave for a day or two and I don't have to worry about making sure it's empty before we go. When we change him on our main floor, we either cloth diaper, or put a dirty disposable in the kitchen trash, which gets emptied almost daily.

  • I do have to laugh at some of these posts, how are people's diaper genies getting so smelly and dirty? It's not like you're just throwing poo in there. You put a wrapped up diaper in the chute. Frankly, if you wrap the diaper tight enough, there isn't much smell coming out of it anyway. We have been using ours for 15 months now, and after the dirty diapers are removed, there isn't a lingering smell. If there was, I'd be all over it. I have a nose like a bloodhound.
