Sort of S/O: At what age...

I was thinking about this a couple days ago and Cali's post reminded me to ask:

At what age do you think your kids will be responsible for their own hygiene?

EX:

nail clipping?

ears w/ qtips?

showering unassisted?

other?

And do you think it's different for boys vs girls?

Re: Sort of S/O: At what age...

  • nail clipping? hmmm...maybe 7? I have no idea...and hopefully they won't bite their nails either!

ears w/ qtips? Probably around 5

showering unassisted? around 5-6 when I feel they can really clean themselves and get all the soap off.

other? Brush their teeth alone: probably 4? I still don't trust her right now with floride toothpaste that she won't swallow. And i want to make sure she cleans all her teeth properly.

I think it's the same for both boys and girls

  • i really don't know but to me, my niece was probably doing all this on her own full time around 6 but i can't see a couple of boys being good at qtipping their ears at that age :-/

I think it depends on the kiddo.  My SCs where 5 and 7 (the younger two) when I came into their lives.  The oldest was a boy - 7 and he did not cut his own finger nails till he was about 9.  Not sure if it was a "dont want to" thing, or what.  He does his own now.  But then, not so much.  He has always showered unassisted, with us just checking on him.

Now the 5 year old, she didn't really start bathing unassisted till about 8 or 9.  We would help get her shower stuff together and then check on her a bunch.  Have to help her wash her hair because it is so thick and she never seemed to get all the stuff out of it.  We would *teach* her each time how to feel for shampoo and conditioner so she would learn, just took time to catch on completely.  Her nail clipping really started when she figured out what nail polish was - around 9/10.  We would help her and train again.

They were brushing their teeth by this time and had been for a while.

    EX:

nail clipping? 9, DS is almost 5 but I still don't think he would be able to do this on his own

    ears w/ qtips? 7

showering unassisted? We have let him take a bath on his own since he turned 4

    other?

And do you think it's different for boys vs girls? not exactly sure, I don't have any girls so its hard for me to compare

    EX:

nail clipping?  DD bites her nails - ugh!  Probably 7 on this one?

ears w/ qtips? There's no way now, I'm too scared she'll push them too far in.  Probably 8 or 9.

showering unassisted?  She only takes showers and has alone since she was 4.  I peep in to make sure she rines all of her hair out since it's so thick.  If it were a bath then probably a little older.

other?  What about caring for pets?  She is resposible for fedding our dog and would love to go walk her, but I'm not comfortable with that yet.  Maybe 2nd grade walking to dog around the block?  Now she just does it with DH every night.

And do you think it's different for boys vs girls? I think it depends on the kid, not the gender.

  • nail clipping?  O already does this on his own at 3.  Much to the horror of others.

qtipping?  O already wants to do this himself and I let him root around on the outside.  I don't know when I'll feel comfortable letting him do it independently.

showering unassisted?  I've got no clue.  Maybe 7?  My almost 6 year old niece still needs help washing her hair.

I think this is all kid dependent.

  • SS was babied a lot, so at 7 he had never tried. He could do it soon after, but hated it so much that I filed his nails for him until he was 10. He did his own after that, but only with reminding and nagging. Clipping his own nails without reminding? 15yo.

    We don't do q-tips.

I don't know when SS started showering by himself, but until he was about 9 or 10, DH would pop his head in the bathroom and ask him if he'd washed his hair... so again only with reminders.
