Detroit Metro Daycare reccomendations

I'm thinking about this way to early...i'm not even pregnant yet! We're starting to do a little pre-baby planning.

I'm starting to scout out daycares, just to get an idea of how much it might be. If you have a place you're using that you love, could you send it my way possibly along with the price. A lot of daycares don't list pricing on their website.

I live in Rochester, and my husband and i work in Warren & Shelby Twp. Anywhere in those areas would we awesome. We're willing to drive a little out of the way if needed.

 Thanks!

  • I am also a pre-planner, but I think you are doing this WAY too early.  If you want to get a feel for how much money you would need to budget when the baby comes, perfect - scout around.

If you are actually looking for the place that you will send your child, hold off until you are mid-way through your pregnancy.  Remember, directors change, teachers change, and therefore the educational philosophy changes.  What you fall in love with now will probably not be the same place in the future and some other place may not talk to you because they don't have any openings now or you wrinkle your nose at something they are doing at this moment, but would be perfect in the future.

We found a wonderful in-home daycare, but other then to tell you how much she charges, she is full at the moment and probably would not spend the valuable time to explain everything for a "possible, but we don't know when in the future" situation.  She is in Garden City, so it would not help you anyway... but if there is a similar situation where you are, you could be missing out by conducting your search early.

This is just my two cents.  I wish you well on your journey.  Being a mom is the most stressful and wonderful thing I have ever done.  Best wishes!

  • Sorry, I meant to tell you that when we looked, we got a wide range of prices.  We pay $125 a week and that includes meals.  That was the cheapest we found.  We also looked at places that were $145/week with meals and $175/week w/o meals.

    Good luck!

  • We haven't started our babies in child care yet, but we looked at five centers in our area (Livonia) and found they range from $46-52 per day for full time. For part time it's more, from $49 to $70 per day.

I know there are less expensive centers out there than the ones we looked at and the one we have ultimately chosen. However, from what I've seen, you get what you pay for as far as the teachers' education level, the quality of the building and grounds, what they provide as far as meals/snacks, and so on. In home centers are cheaper, as are nannies in most cases, but having worked in a fantastic center in college myself, I'm just more comfortable with that kind of environment. You might want to research those as well, though. (Enrolling two at once opens up a whole other set of issues financially, but that information most likely won't be relevant to you.)

There are a lot of websites with lists of questions to ask and issues to consider. Just do a google search if you want more guidance like that. GL! I know we weren't ready to really talk about TTC until we had a sense of what we were getting into financially. Since we ended up with two babies at once, I'm glad we didn't go into this blindly!

  • As if I didn't babble on enough already...

Looking back at the previous post I realize she found some centers with much more affordable rates than I did, and I don't want my post to sound like I'm criticizing what she chose. I didn't mean it that way at all.

  • I had a coworker in Rochester Hills and she used Kiddie Academy and really liked it.  Good luck TTC.
