XP:Transplant nestie--advice?

Hi ladies, I'm a nestie from Detroit who just found out my husband got a job transfer to Kansas City, MO. Do you have any recs on nice areas to live? We are 100% unfamiliar with the area so any advice is welcome. I'm going to be looking for a job as an in house lawyer, so any help with that is welcome too. Thank you!

What area is his job at? That makes a huge difference on where you will be looking for homes.

  • Hi! As Jen said, it will help us to know where his job is since the KC metro area is pretty spread out.

I'm originally from Sterling Heights, so as one transplanted Michigander to another, welcome to the area!

  • I agree with the other ladies, once you have an idea of where his job is located in KC, it would be easier to narrow things down. If you will be working as a lawyer, then downtown KC is where a lot of the business is in KC as well as shops, restaurants, and entertainment. If you want to live in a more suburban area, you have lots of options as well. I live in the Northland area and LOVE it as I am originally from a small town and prefer the slower pace. Blue Springs or Raytown area (eastern side of KC) or Lee's Summit (Southern suburbs) are also nice areas. Good luck!

  • Ditto other posters - it depends on where DH's job is, and it depends on what you're comfortable with.  Personally, I would not live anywhere in the KCMO school district because it's an unaccredited train wreckand they recently had to close half of their schools for budget reasons.  I would also recommend renting wherever you're considering first to get a good feel of the neighborhood (neighborhood stores, community activities/involvement, etc).  I hate the town where I live and regret, every day, that we didn't do that first and now we're stuck until the market improves.

  • Thanks for your responses everyone. My husband is in sales and will be calling on stores in the Kansas City area as well as in Kansas and one store in Nebraska. So we can really live anywhere in that general region. I know that is broad...but any help would be great!

  • If you can describe your ideal town (suburbs with lots of community activities/involvement, near college/university, downtown, good school districts, middle/upper middle class, white collar/blue collar, how far away from KC, etc.) it might help us to direct you to look into areas that are a "right" fit for you, depending on what you're looking for.  We all have preferences for living in 'this' town or 'that' town, and what's a "right" fit for me may not be a "right" fit for you.

  • Thank you!

Our ideal town, let's see. We are coming from an upper middle class area, with lots of parks and lakes. It's a suburb of Detroit, so I guess I'd classify ourselves as typical suburbanites.  We take our dog to a dog park right around the corner every day. School districts aren't that important yet as we don't have kids. We'll be renting for awhile (since we have to sell our house here and will be taking a huge hit) so we're looking for an apt/condo/townhome/house with a garage. I'd like to be near places to shop for groceries, clothes, etc. My husband is calling on a large territory, so it doesn't really matter how close to KC we are. I'm going to be looking for a job--how is the job market? Tough and slow? (I hope not). Any help anyone can give me on resources to help find or look for a job would be great too!

    Thank you again!

  • I would recommend looking into the Overland Park, Shawnee, Lenexa areas on the Kansas side.  There is a fenced dog park near Johnson County Community College.  https://www.dogparkusa.com/dog-park-regions/kansas/kansas-city-topeka  On the Missouri side, I'd recommend looking into Lee's Summit.  They have both fenced and unfenced parks.  https://www.dogparkusa.com/missouri/kansas-city.  There are more lakes on the MO side of KC.  I've lived on both sides of the state line and found the governments (county and state) easier to deal with on the KS side.

I'm sorry I can't give you any advice on the job market - the only law firm I'm familiar with is Shook, Hardy & Bacon.  But as someone who lives in one state and works in the other, I have to warn you that taxes can become a bit more complicated when you go back and forth between the states (doable, but a hassle).  Plus, if you work in KC proper, you will have to pay additional income tax.

Good luck in your search & let me know if you need more info!

This! I was actually thinking Johnson County while I was reading through your post. I live in Platte City, MO (which I love and is just north of KC by about 5 minutes) but I work in Shawnee, KS and it has your water, your dog parks...everything. Plus the schools are really nice once you need them.
