Adding formula to water...

Does it really matter? DH had early shift last night and when i took over he had the powder in a clean bottle ready to add water, rather than vice versa. Is there any harm in this?

Re: Adding formula to water...

  • Well, if you do it the way your supposed to, each scoop only adds .2oz, so I would just add the water a touch over the amount of oz you're making. I'm sure if you don't, it's not a big deal though, since it's such a small amount.

  • i'm sure it doesn't really matter all that much, but our can of formula says to do the water first.  i'm assuming it's because when the powder is already there you're not really adding, say, 5 oz. of water, it's probably more like 4.75 oz.

  • Harm? no Mess? Yes. It's more difficult to dissolve the powder fully if it gets saturated in a clump. Pouring it in on top lets it disperse better i think. Also it's just difficult to tell that you're putting the right amount of water in. I did it on accident once just because i had a mommy mush brain incident and because he's taking 5 oz in a 6 oz bottle the stupid powder was flying out the top and got chunky and was a mess. When i put the powder in last I can go slow and let it disperse so there's room. Also when you put the water in 1st you have the luxury of pouring out excess when you accidentally overfill and not wasting formula.

  • Well, the water was premeasured (we use a 1/4 c measuring cup) and put into a water bottle. There doesn't seem to be a clumping issue for only 2oz. LO tolerates refrigerated formula, but feeds smoother on room temp, so if this is safe (usually only overnight) it might be the way to go.
