Silver Nitrate?

Has anyone had to have the Pedi put silver nitrate on the belly button to heal the umbilical cord? My 1 month old had this done yesterday at 1mth checkup and it seems to be bothering her. I say this bc she has been having random screaming fits, mostly after the area is irritated, she has never done this before....

 

ps It's totally freaking me out, esp bc the Dr. said it wouldn't hurt  :(

    We had this done and it didn't bother DS at all.  It did turn his belly button and surrounding skin black which then peeled off and now all is well.

    Maybe some tylenol if it's stinging?

    I've had silver nitrate on my cervix.  It hurts like a b*tch, so the pedi was lying.  With that being said, DD had is done a week or so ago.  She cried for a few seconds, and it didn't bother her after that.  The black stuff finally peeled off yesterday.  I didn't want to peel it off myself because I didn't know if it would bleed again.

    happened to my daughter too. i got some on my fingers on accident and it didn't hurt. they looked all black and crazy for a few days, but it didn't hurt. i'd think it is coincidence.

    This....LO didn't have any reaction to it being done or afterwards.
