My mom had melanoma a few years ago, the doctor missed it but she had that mole removed because she didn't like it - thankfully she did and they caught it early enough.
My dad went in for a skin check yesterday and there's a spot on his face they think might be basal cell, thankfully typically not fatal.
Re: yet another reminder for skin checks
TTC #2 since 9/09 --- mild PCOS; Endometriosis
IUI x4 = BFN
IVF = sometime in 2012
Glad it's just basal!
I had told you before but DH is going in a few weeks to get some on his back checked. They haven't changed size or anything since we noticed them a few months ago but like you said, better to be safe than sorry!
Yep! They don't know for sure it's basal, they just think it is!
He went in to have some moles on his back checked. The suspect spot is on his face, but not a mole. I guess the doctor asked him how long he'd had a spot that seemed like a pimple that wouldn't go away, and my dad said 2 months.
Just go regularly!
I read an article once that had you guess which person was most likely to get skin cancer - of course I picked the fairest one, but it wasn't the case. I wish I could recall the details but it's been a while. My mom is not fair at all though! I'm thinking if you burn easily maybe you're likely to watch it, but like in my mom's case (medium tone) she didn't worry as much? Just a guess. I don't know.
True. It seems to be people that a) love tanning beds, or b) don't think about it because they aren't "fair" skinned. However, I got a lot of bad burns during summer day camps as a kid, so that's why I'm scared now.
I got burned a lot on vacation when I refused to wear sun screen
Our parents used to lay out with oil though!!!
I'm reading this though, which says being fair is a factor, so I have no idea what article I remember reading or what it said. LOL. Forget that!
"If you have blond or red hair and light-colored eyes, and you freckle or sunburn easily, you're much more likely to develop skin cancer than is a person with darker features."
"Having multiple blistering sunburns as a child or teenager increases your risk of developing skin cancer as an adult."
Hmm, I will definitely call and make an appointment. Do you just see a dermatologist or regular doctor? I don't have either!
See a derm. Go to dr Marc Frost. He's really awesome and located kind of near you.
Not to freak you guys out but there was a lady in my hometown who found out she had skin cancer while she was pregnant. It had migrated and she had enlarged lymph nodes in her crotch area. She died a few months after giving birth.
Sucks but I agree, check often!
