Colic Tips/Help?

Hi girls...I've been MIA for a little bit.  We've had a busy few weeks.  Moved to our new house Monday and have been a little more than overwhelmed this week.  Anyway - it seems as though Ashlyn has colic.  Do any of you girls have experience with it?  We're doing everything we can and we have some good nights and some bad.  She's always been pretty fussy in the evening, but Monday night, she screamed for 3 hours straight.  Since then, from about 6 or 7 until about 10 she is SUPER fussy and either cries non-stop or cries hard for a while, then takes a break for a few minutes and starts right back up again.  I've completely limited my diet by cutting out dairy, caffeine, gassy foods (broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.), chocolate, and spices (cinnamon and anything considered spicy).  Is there anything that I'm missing?  She's on Prilosec for her reflux and I think the dose needs to be adjusted for her weight gain, so I'll ask the pedi about that on Tuesday at her appointment.  We have the colic tablets.  We try everything when she's crying...outside, inside, swaddle, non-swaddle, pacing, bouncing, swinging, etc.  To be honest, the only thing we've found that kind of works is being outside.  I don't know if it's the temperature difference or what.  Anyway - long story short, I'm just looking for any additional insight.  It's tough with a 2.5 yr old at home too and I know it wears on her. I feel so bad for Haley most nights and I just want both of my girls to feel ok. We can definitely tell that Haley is feeling more than a little left out and are trying to split colic duty at night so that at least one of us is spending time with Haley.

Any advice is appreciated!  TIA!

  • Have you thought about a children's chiroporacter?  We took B to see her

FWIW - I have never seen a chiropracter and was v. nervous but willing to try anything.  Our neighbor referred her.  I was holding B the whole time and she didn't crack anything - it was more like a massage.  She used her fingers on his muscles while I was holdng him.  We went a couple of times and it did seem to help B.  I did some research and I have heard people sayig that this helped with their babies - however, my pedi was not a fan.  Hope this might work - I was very nervous and very adament about wanting something low key (no "cracking, machines, etc) and Dr E was v. good about that.

    Good Luck!

  • Have you tried white noise?  It's the only thing that worked for us.  Well...that and....she slept on her tummy from week 2 forward.  She had silent reflux.  Our pedi knew about her sleeping on her tummy.  We had no other SIDS risk factors, etc....and that's the only thing that ended up working for us.

  • Do you wear her at all?  Have you tried gripe water or Mylicon?

I agree with the white noise suggestion, too.  I hope things get better soon!

I second the gripe water. That helped a lot with B. Also, do you have an exercise ball? That constant motion helped B.

Good luck! Hopefully it will pass soon!

  • My LO had the same issues. Baby wearing with a moby helped as well as putting her in a warm bath on the days that were really bad.

She's much better now but I bought this today for the "witching hour" she has every evening. A friend swears by putting a warm water bottle against babies tummy and I thought it was worth a try. (I got it at buybuybaby).

  • Def look into the Prilosec dosage.  Our pedi wouldn't prescribe enough and we had to go to a GI doctor to get it right. Any less and he was an absolute mess.

Also, ditto pp, Andrew couldn't sleep on his back. He'd wake up in vomit, gasping for breath, and freak out.  As opposed to being a tummy sleeper, we got a sleep wedge and sleep positioner so he could sleep on his side with the head of his bed elevated.

We held him up right 30 min after ever meal, although I'm not sure how much it helped since his reflux was bad for almost 2 hours after he ate.

We also made sure he got enough sleep and was super finicky.  If he got a little over tired he was a nightmare and his reflux was also worse since he was worked up and less coordinated when eating.

I hope it gets better.  Hugs)!!

  • try throwing her blanket in the dryer for a few to get all nice and warm and then swaddle her.  Also the warm bottle or warm pad on her belly.  My niece had it and the only thing that worked was contant rocking while being held tight.  Also the gripe water.  Good luck I hope it gets better.

  • Also if she has gas pain, bicycle her legs for about 10 min per day. We did this for Andrew a LOT.  They taught us that tip in the NICU.
