Natural Birth

Gestational Diabetes

Has anyone been able to accomplish a natural birth with this risk factor?

I have my glucose test on July 12th. My mom has severe diabetes so I have an irrational fear that I am doing all this work preparing for a natural birth. Only to end up with GD and have to get a csection.

In my hypnobirthing classes we are doing our fear release worksheets... so. If anyone can share stories or insights to help me ease my irrational fears I would appreciate it.

  • I have GD - whille I haven't actually been through labor yet, my OB has been very supportive of my having a natural birth.  As long as you keep your sugars under control, and therefore the size of your LO normal, you shouldn't have any greater risk of a c-section than any other woman.

  • From what I understand (and I could be wrong) GD doesn't have anything to do with regular diabetes. GD is something that develops because of pregnancy, not because of genetics. My grandmother had diabetes and my OB told me it would have no effect on whether or not I had it (fortunately I didn't have it.)

Just don't freak out about the test, and definitely don't try to "trick" the test (I've seen other girls on 3rd tri ask about that.) And don't freak out if you fail the one hour test. I failed it by ONE point and my doctor said it was better safe than sorry to do the 3 hour test. Just mentally prepare for it like you would for the other tests they do during pregnancy and know that you are doing everything YOU can to have a healthy baby. :)

  • I have Type 1 diabetes - not GD, but similar-ish.  I was able to have a natural birth in a hospital, and am planning a homebirth this time around.

If you have it, you can check out www.forums.delphiforums.com/diabeticmommy/messages

Although many of the ladies there had highly intervention-heavy births, there are some who went med-free.  Regardless, they're a great source of information and support for someone with GD, Type 1, Type 2, Type 1.5, etc.

  • I don't have it, but a woman with GD in my class just had her baby naturally.  Her GD was controllable with diet, she had a lot of extra appointments for non stress tests, etc, but birth was no different.
  • I had GD.  I was able to control it with diet and exercise.  My OB wanted to schedule an induction a few days before my due date (which I was okay with-I had LOTS of reasons and was 2 1/2 cm dilated and my cervix was very "ripe."  OB expected to be able to just break my water to get labor started.).  However, I went into labor naturally two days before my induction date.  OB broke my water an hour after I got to the hospital (at 4cm) and DD was born an hour and a half later.  I did not have any pain medications.  They did some brief monitoring, but I was able to move around after that.  DD was 8# 10 oz.
