Keeping pacifier in LO's mouth?

She's starting to get into the pacifier, especially when she's going to sleep. But she often spits it out. Does anyone know how we can practice her sucking skills so she keeps it in and doesn't spit it out?

  • lol at "sucking skills". No, I don't. Usually when ds spits his out is when he is falling asleep. No problems once it's out.

  • My DS will keep his paci in better if he is facing straight up. If his head turns to either side, the paci falls out. I have also been taking his hand and using it to hold in the paci. Sometimes he holds it in, sometimes he doesn't.

  • For me, thats what I like - DS spits it out when he's done.  But, I have seen these.  Again, I don't have any personal experience.

  • UGH! I have the same issue. DD wont keep it in her mouth, but she cries for it when she spits it out. I do agree with the PP that if her head is straight up, its more likely to stay in. Hopefully the sucking skills (LOL) get better!
  • I'm not sure what kind of pacifiers you guys are using but we use the soothies. A friend told me about an animal that hold the pacifier in. It's a giraffe (they may come in other animals) and it has a soothie pacifier on the end of its mouth and the baby is suppose to hold on to the animal so the pacifier stays in there mouth. Now obviously she wont be able to do that for awhile but its worth a shot. I bought one, but I havent used it yet. I got mine off of diapers.com. Hope this helps!

  • I don't really use a paci but in the HBOB video he said to pull on it when it is in LO's mouth and the will instinctively suck harder to keep it in.  Most people try to hold it in LO's mouth but that does not encourage them to suck.

I've tried this technique and my LO will suck on the paci harder when I tug on it.  I tug on it 5-10 times and then leave him to go at it. You just have to tug gently and their instinct is to suck harder.

A wubbanub? We have a puppy dog one and I plan on getting the giraffe. They're adorable! It def makes the paci easier to find when it does fall out. It usually never hits the floor.
