Ok, I'm heading home tomorrow with my baby boy. We're so excited!
I am most worried about the initial interaction between my baby and the dog (35 pound beagle). I'm not worried so much about them getting along but my dog just gets so excited to meet new people. He often jumps on them no matter how much training we've tried. I don't want to yell at my dog and potentially scare the baby and then make the baby scared of the dog.
Has anyone else been in a similar situation? Any success stories? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
PS - We already have done the whole bring home the babys scent to get him ready and my dog is not territorial. He just loves people.
Re: Coming home - fur babies
Mine is the same way (lab/beagle mix--70 lbs.) and she has been nothing but great around DD. She comes quietly and gently over to her and gives her kisses on the head. The dog also likes to snuggle close to her and I when we're laying in bed or just hanging out. I've been pleased with how well she's done.
Just talk calmly and softly when you get home and allow your dog to "investigate" but make sure she understands to stop if she's too rough. She'll learn really quickly.
Best of luck!
I waited in the car with DD while DH tool a blanket in to let the furbabies get her scent (furbabies are 70 and 110lbs) He let them take their time and when they finished let them outside.
I brought DD in and we let each furbaby in one at a time, told them to be nice and let them see her.
They both did amazing. Just smelled and licked her feet. Now they're both very watchful and protective of her. GL!
My furbabies (96lb Bloodhound & 60lb mutt) are likes yours. They get super-excited and jump. No matter what we tried they won't stop. We did the smell exposure on the blanket and when I brought the baby home, the dogs were very curious. We did have an instance of jumping the 1st day, but now, all they do is smell him, lick his feet and hands, and stay very close to him. They are his protectors! I think that the novelty wore off. They now know that he is here to stay.
Make sure that the dogs know their boundaries-how close they can get and how rough they can be.
I am not looking forward to when DS starts to crawl or walk though. He will never be able to have food in his hands - the dogs would knock him out of the way to get the food!!
