Trouble TTC

(NTTCR) What are your thoughts on...

Little kids drinking pop (soda, coke, etc..)?

I am babysitting my BFF's 2 girls today ages 3 and 6 1/2 (she and HH are in CA on a trip and today was my day to watch them) and they typically drink pop on a regular basis.  While the older one was a summer recreation this morning the younger one played queitly for an hour which is not the norm.  She asked for pop at breakfast, but I did not give it to her.

At lunch they both asked for it and I again said no.  Normally, they are pretty hyper and at times not very well behaved.  I am not saying the pop (aka - sugar and caffeine) is what causes that behavior, but it makes me curious.  I know I never really let my DD have it when she was young so this was never an issue.

  • My DD has never had soda and I am going to keep her away from it as long as I can.  My DD drinks only water, milk or juice and until she can provide for herself that is what I am serving.

  • I agree...waaaay too young!  One of my nieces recently turned 10 and had her first soda at her b-day party.  She is 'allowed' to have one small glass of soda (not a whole can) per week and sometimes she opts not to even drink that one.

  • I'm personally against kids that young having soda.  Definitely not with every meal.  By the time they're 10 they won't have any teeth!

  • I agree, no pop at that age!  That's ridiculous!

  • I would give them a small amount if we were out and thats what I was drinking and was the easiest, but no way on a regular basis (I'm talking once every 6 months at that age).  The reason I wouldn't say no all together is that when I was a kid, my parents never let us have pop and I went thru a phase of sneaking it and in HS drank 3-4 during the school day.
  • There is no soda in our house for him.  So if he gets it it is from elsewhere.  I don't think he needs that ever...so I'm not providing it :)

Oh, I am not saying they should never, ever have it (I still think 3 is too young), once in awhile for a treat maybe or if on vacation or something.  My DD had it occasionally, but only sprite or 7up - nothing with caffeine.  But, these girls drink it daily and they have coke or pepsi.

I don't want to seem like the big "meanie" because I won't let them have it at my house and I am only babysitting, but I really just don't want them running around wild today.  And they really do seem calmer without it.  In fact, the little one is napping now and my friend normally has A LOT of trouble getting her to nap and go to bed at night - like she will stay up to 11 or midnight easily.  She doesn't seem to connect that it could be from the caffeine.

  • That's insane!  I think I started with soda when I was about 7ish and I was allowed 1 cup at dinner on Friday(/pizza) nights only.

This lasted a few years, and I plan on sticking to a similar plan.

My younger nephews get to drink soda on occasion.  It isn't daily, so it is a treat, but it is definitely more than once a month.  Usually they get caffeine free sodas (sprite, orange, etc.).  Sometimes they get a few sips or part of a can of somebody elses drink that would have caffeine.  They are the best behaved kids I have ever seen.  I don't think the caffeine/sugar affects them too much (at least not behaviorally).  Mostly they drink water or soy milk.

I don't have a problem with soda as a treat.
