3rd Trimester

Crazy weight gain

A little background.  I'm petitie (5'1" usually 115lbs).  When I got pregnant I was still in the process of losing a ton of weight from a medication I was on that made me gain 25 lbs in 2 months.  So I was around 125 when I got pregnant.  I had 17 weeks of horrible ms and lost 20 lbs (lowest weight was 104lbs).  Since 17 weeks the scale has been going up, up, and up some more every week.  I got on this morning and it said 139.  All this has been in a pound or two a week.  I went to the doc the other week and saw a new OBGYN (who I hated) and she casually mentioned I had put on a lot of weight since my last appointment, then she walked out of the room (literally the only comment she made the whole appointment).  So for the past 2 weeks I've now been stressing about my weight.  Anyone else out there gain a lot after losing a lot?  I know your suppose to gain between 25 and 35lbs, but what starting weight do I use.... my ususal weight, the weight I was when I got pregnant, or my lowest weight during pregnancy..... so confusing!!!!

So I've either gained 14 lbs (yay me!) or 35 lbs (that seems high for only 31 weeks and only 5'1").

Yes I know if I eat healthy and exercise the weight doesn't matter, but just looking for some reassurance that I am on the right track.

Re: Crazy weight gain

  • you use the weight you were when you got pregnant...use the 14, she probably just didn't look closely at your chart. I gained nothing for the first 4 months and then had a big jump...my dr said thats usually what happens when you don't gain anything in the beginning.

  • My doc goes by my lowest in pregnancy.  Which really bums me out because it is 5-10lbs lower than my pre-pregnancy weight.

  • I'm 5'2" & my pre pregnancy weight was 112.  I'm now at 168 at 34 weeks.  I did not lose even 1 lb from ms.  In fact I gained 10 in my first trimester.  My regular OB said she expected me to gain 40+ (she even told me my first 10 lbs, may have been what my body needed to help sustain myself and the baby & I shouldn't count it....I do though) and my new OB (because my regular one went on maternity leave) said (when I hit 50lbs) that me and LO are very healthy & the weight is fine.  He (OB #2) says its not uncommon for thin people to gain extra weight especially when they are short.

A picture is worth a thousand words. I'd bet money your words are ignorant.
  • I gained 16lbs in one month.  Dont' know why, I was not eating any different than I had been throughout this entire pregnancy.  To be honest with you, I don't worry about the weight that I gain.  I eat right and exercise when I can.  My Dr was not too concerned with the weight gain (he just told me to be careful).  I am up 35lbs right now and still have 4 weeks left to go.  It will all be fine. Tell that dr to stuff it.
  • I lost about 10 the first couple months, it didn't matter what I shoved down my thoat I couldn't gain weight, then these last 2 months I blew up. I gained back the 10 plus another on top of that. My OB goes by my lowest weight loss since being pregnant, which I don't like cause that means 20+ lbs, it sounds nicer saying I've only gained 10 lol.

  • My OB goes from the weight when you become pregnant.  She also has told me that she doesn't look at how many pounds I have gained in between visits, but rather my overall weight gain.  One time I gained 6lbs in 4 weeks and then the next visit, I had only gained 1lb in 4 weeks.  So far, I'm at 24lbs when I had my 32 week appt.  I gained 30lbs with DS and I'm thinking I will be gaining closer to 35 this time around.  I gain weight right up to when I deliver...you may get lucky and lose weight the last few weeks.
  • Don't let that doctor make you feel bad. I have gained 50 lbs at this point and my doctors are happy that me and LO are both healthy. I know I have a lot to lose afterward and my appearance is killing me but I know it's better that we are both healthy than I look fantastic. Hope you cheer up soon :)
  • Either way - don't beat yourself up over the weight. I'm 5'2 and 105lb prepreg.. the highest I've been during the preg is 142lbs.. but it's been fluctuating a lot due to the lovely water weight in my feet and ankles.  I definitely don't look like I've gained a ton of weight all over.. but I'm sure the big belly makes the tush and hips look smaller to me then they really are!
  • I'm 5'7" and weighted 160lbs before being pregnant. I switched OB/GYN at 13 weeks and recently switched back to the first one(I thought I wanted to be closer to home, but the local Dr's are so unprofessional). When I saw him on Monday he said super loud as we were walking to the exam room "WHOA, you've gained 22lbs since the last time I've seen you?" I was a little embarrassed and confused and then he said, "I'm just messing with you". (He's got a great sense of humor and can joke around and make me laugh at just about anything) I'm 31 weeks and have gained 30lbs so far as of Monday, and since Monday I've gained 4lbs.
  • Thanks Ladies!  I feel a lot better now.  That stupid doctor just seriously gave me a complex (I really hope she isn't on call when this baby comes).  It sounds like the doctor's aren't even sure what weight to use as your starting weight.  I like the idea of using the weight I was when i got pregnant (b/c then I've only gained 14 lbs) and this makes me feel better about myself : )

Thanks for all your support.... I <3 the bump!

  • Personally, I'd go by what your typical pre-pg weight was (115) - so essentially you've only gained 24 pounds. That or the 14 lb figure. :)
  • Sounds like you and I have the same doctor, lol!  I saw a different doctor this week because I go to a large practice!  She basically yelled at me because I have gained 30 pounds at only 29 weeks!  I was an avid workout freak before becoming pregnant, training for a tri!  Well, I still work out, obviously not as hard and not as frequently anymore, I just cant.  So I am assuming I will gain close to 50 once its all said and done, which Im not happy with but it is what it is.  Also, I know I have to lose it, so hopefully DH will be wonderful and let me workout alot once he gets home from work and LO is here!
