SWADDLING POLL: Do u still swaddle? Did you stop? When? Why? Help!

Hi there ladies. As luck would have it when we were at the dr. a few days ago I forgot to ask about swaddling and how much longer we could do it. I'm super nervous NOT to do it anymore but I guess it's just one of those things that has to happen some time... How about you?

We've been trying to get DS to sleep without being swaddled and every time it has been a disaster. I've tried just swaddling with one arm in, but that didn't go well. I tried just going cold turkey without the swaddle, that was another fail.

How old is your LO? 8 weeks on Saturday

Do you still swaddle your LO? Yes

We have tried to not swaddle her and she will make it about halfway through the night.

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? Yes, we stopped about 2.5 months.

Why did you stop swaddling? He started rolling over from back to belly very easily.

Anything else? Once, DS could roll he wanted to sleep on his side and now his belly, so he did not usually startle himself anymore. Because he could sleep how he wanted, I think he actually slept better without the swaddle.

Why did you stop swaddling? She got too hot

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? When she gets upset (even still) and can't get her to sleep because of it, we lay her down, and take a blanket and put it around just her chest and arms, tucking it tightly under her or we wrap it tightly around her chest and arms then lay her down, Just having the compression on her top half helps, but she wiggles loose in her sleep and then is ok. We keep an eye on her till we can take the blanket away completely.

How old is your LO? She's 20 months now

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? I swaddled her until she was 10 months. I was concerned, but my pedi told me to swaddle as long as she needed it and that she would let me know when she didn't need it anymore.

Why did you stop swaddling? At about 10 months she consistently broke out her swaddle at night and would put herself back to sleep without any help from me. That's when I knew she was ready.

Anything else? My LO pushed up, rolled over, pulled up, crawled and walked "on time" or a bit earlier. Being swaddled for naps and at night didn't delay any of her milestones.

Why did you stop swaddling? He likes his hands free and does not startle himself with his movements. Also he got hot and was more fussy swaddled.

How old is your LO? 5 months old

Do you still swaddle your LO? Yes and No. I don't swaddle for bedtime anymore. However, when he wakes up around 5 or 6am to eat, we change his diaper and then swaddle because that is the only way to get him to go back to sleep, usually for another few hours, till around 8 or 9 am.

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? We stopped swaddling at bedtime around 2.5 months old.

Why did you stop swaddling? We stopped because he moves so much in his sleep we were afraid of him suffocating and rolling over.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? We didn't have too much of a problem. We transitioned to a Halo sleep sack so he still had something over him, and that seemed to help.

Once she started breaking out of her swaddle, I quit. reswaddling her. It was fine. She was maybe 2 months old. Occassionally she would startle herself when she was falling asleep but not to the point of crying.

We stopped swaddling DD at 6.5 months. We probably would have swaddled her longer, but she began to bust out of even the Miracle Blanket, which had been our failsafe swaddle. Our problem was that she had massive itchy eczema and would scratch herself to pieces and scream all night if she wasn't swaddled. I found some sleepwear with mitts (like the newborn stuff) in her size and we switched to that. She wasn't a great sleeper to begin with, and deswaddling did make it a bit harder to put her to sleep at first. We didn't have a choice, though, so we just kept on keeping on and eventually she got used to it. The tricks other people use, like putting one arm out, or just swaddling the lower body, didn't help us at all.

Carter is 5 months old, and we haven't swaddled since 3 weeks. He just didn't like it, so we stopped cold turkey, and he's been sleeping great ever since.

Stella kept breaking her arms free around 6-7 weeks. We've been doing legs only ever since.

Not really...just trial and error really. Not sure when she will be completely swaddle free though.

Anything else?
She has been STTN (7-9 hours) pretty much since we changed her swaddle. I think she was waking herself up trying to break her arms free. I think babies will tell you when they're done with swaddling. Good luck!

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? stopped by 3 weeks

Why did you stop swaddling? She kicked out of it, and I thought she would be too warm with her jammies and the swaddle.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? Just do it!

Anything else? We did have 2 rolled up receiving blankets on both sides of her (under her arms, at her sides). We just stopped doing this.

yes at 5 months--he was a small 5 months though, so we were able to go longer due to weight limits. He's around 17 lbs now.
Why did you stop swaddling?
he was breaking out of everything and I was afraid of the extra material wrapping around his face
Any tips/tricks that worked for you?
we started with naps and sleep sacks. He wasn't a good sleeper due to allergies. It gets much better when they can roll over.

How old is your LO? will be 5 months in 1 week

Do you still swaddle your LO? Yes, fully swaddled, hospital style, for the first 4 weeks only. At 1 month of age we just swaddled legs and body, but not the arms (because he would just get them out anyway).

Did you stop swaddling your LO? How old were they? Yes, we stopped swaddling at 3 months of age.

Why did you stop swaddling? We stopped because I didn't want it to be necessary for too long and because it would never really stay swaddled due to his kicking around and moving and it would more or less cause him to wake up as he hated the restriction.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? We stopped the swaddle and switched to a sleep sack. It worked from day 1. We still use it. Plan to continue for a while.

I quit swaddling around 4 weeks because DD hated it. Whenever we would swaddle her she would cry and cry until we took her out of the swaddle. If we put her in bed without the swaddle she would go right to sleep. We started using a sleep sack instead.

Why did you stop swaddling? We sleep trained (www.3daysleep.com) and a big part of the program is no sleep crutches. The creator said no swaddling past 3 months.

Any tips/tricks that worked for you? We went cold turkey. It's hard but LO will learn to fall asleep without it. It's hard though.
