Parenting after a Loss

Solid questions; please help :)

Please forgive me for the following two questions as I think they are both probably quite dumb ...

1)  The pediatrician said that a meal should consist of about a tbsp of food per food group, so three tbsp. in total.  I'm not great at math but one jar of food has about 4 oz. which is 8 tbsp., and Will eats the whole jar.  Am I overfeeding him?  Yikes

 2) If you add rice cereal to fruit do you make it into cereal first (by adding milk or formula) or do you just add the scoop of rice cereal into the fruit by itself. (I told you it was dumb :)

 Thanks ladies!

  • To answer your question 1, I am going to say no b/c I too have a big eater.  She eats about 2 oz a night and it's usually one veggie and one fruit.  I try to follow her cues.  As long as you are not shoving it in against his will and he is showing interest in the spoon and opening his mouth in anticipation, you are probably fine!  I'm no doctor though.

Question 2 I have no idea b/c she doesn' like rice cereal even mixed with other stuff but I would say to mix it directly with the baby food is probably fine without adding BM or formula.  I hated the thought of wasting the BM in unfinished rice cereal.

  • 1) 4 oz is a serving of food according to the jar. I can't imagine the doctor thinking 3T is enough for a 9 month old. Dylan isn't that big of a solid eater and he easily eats 3T now at 7 months. Maybe he was saying at least 1T of each is his recommendation? But no, you are not overfeeding your child.

    2) I usually mix the oatmeal with formula and stir to the desired consistency and feed the puree seperately. I sometimes mix the puree and the mixed formula together. I've never put the cereal powder straight into the puree, but I can't see why that wouldn't work if you just wanted to really thicken up the puree.

  • Oh, and I was thinking, maybe your doctor meant to say 1 oz of each? At least that would be closer to reasonable but still...

  • Well, 3 tbs=1/4 cup=2 oz. So it's only 6 tbs in a jar.  But 2 oz of food per meal at 9 months seems like too little to me.  Maybe DD is just a big eater, but she probably eats the equivalent of about 6 oz of food per meal, three times a day, plus about 22-24 oz of goat milk.

I make the cereal into cereal first, and then add fruit.

I'd say following LO's cues about how hungry he is. My little guy eats anywhere from 3-6 oz per meal, and he's only 5 months. When he starts to push out more than he keeps in, I know he's getting full.

Now that he likes his food thicker, I just add the oatmeal for bulk, without adding any BM.
