Anyone on blood thinners?

What were your symptoms if any?  Did you OB find out just through regular blood work up?

Re: Anyone on blood thinners?

  • My friend just had a baby a few months ago who was on blood thinners.  She found out because a family member had a blood clotting disorder and turns out she had it too.  She was on blood thinners until 2 weeks before her due date, then they took her off them, kept a close eye on her and induced her a week in advance so that everything could be very closely monitored.

  • I was on Heparin from about 38w to 6w PP. I noticed that only one of my legs/feet were swelling. My OB ordered an ultrasound of my leg and they found sluggish flow in my right leg so they put me on the blood thinner as a precaution.

  • Slide on over to the High Risk board, there are a lot of us who are on them. (See the Lovenox Weekly Check-In for the full list, it's pretty big!)

Personally, I had a pulmonary embolism a couple of years ago following a car accident.  I knew that pregnancy increased your chances of clotting even if you DON'T have any history, so knowing my body was already prone to them I talked to my doc before we started TTC this time, and he ran a bloodwork panel. It came back positive for a clotting disorder called MTHFR. In my case, it's relatively mild, but since I've had the prior PE, he sent me to a high-risk specialist who prescribed Lovenox.  I'll switch to Heparin in a few weeks (which seems to be standard in most cases) because it leaves your system faster than Lovenox does, and therefore causes fewer complications during birth.  Like PP said, we'll also be inducing to make sure we get the timing right.

  • My brother had a DVT.  After that, we were all tested for the genetic disposition to clotting.  I was diagnosed with FVL hetero and MTHFR hetero.  I had one full term pregnancy pre-diagnosis.  Even though I haven't clotted, my OB decided to put me on thinners due to a miscarriage and my mom's history of miscarriage.

So I'm on a preventative dose of lovenox during pregnancy.  If you are concerned, you can ask your OB to run a blood test although insurance probably won't cover it unless you are having some symptoms.
