North Dakota Babies

Heard from the Mechanic :(

and my poor car is dead! The engine is pretty done for, the mechanic said it is going to cost $5200 for a new timing belt and engine parts. PLUS I need new struts and new tires.

This is terrible, terrible news since we only have one income right now and we cannot afford a new car.

Michael and his dad are going to try and fix it themselves this weekend. I really hope that can fix it, if not we are totally screwed and will only have one car.

I just want to cryCrying

  • NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I'm so sorry, Nicole.  ((( hugs )))

We share a car now since I take the train into work, but we have to buy another one with the baby on the way so I feel your financial pain over the car issue.

  • (((hugs))  Sorry to hear that.  I hope Michael can fix it.
  • aww, that's awful, I'm sorry :(
  • I'm sorry!  ((hugs))...hopefully DH can fix it
  • WOW that sucks.

I'm guessing most of that is for labor -- timing chains are under lots of other parts so it takes time to get to them. But if M & his Dad can do it I'm sure they will save a ton of money.

Do you **need** the tires and struts to pass inspection or are they just recomended that you replace them soon?

There are lots of place online to buy tires, and then you can shop around to see who can mount them for you.  Maybe you just need to balance and rotate them and you can get by for a few more months?

I don't know what kind of car you have, but we order a lot of parts from Summit Racing.  They do competitor price match and if you call them on the phone, you may even be able to score free shipping or a small discount. (Never hurts to ask.)

Sorry to hear about your situation.  I've broken many car parts over the years (and even blown up the same engine twice!) So if you need a sympathetic ear -- I'm here!

  • Oh no.  I am so sorry.  I hope they can fix it this weekend.
  • Oh no! I hope they can get it fixed!
  • Sorry Nicole :( I hope DH can fix it (((hugs)))

  • Ugh!  So sorry to hear.  I buy my tires at Sam's Club (we have a membership) in part because it's cheaper than a lot of places.  Also as long as you keep your membership up, you get free rotations (which reminds me I'm due) which adds up over time.  For my vehicle I got the high end tire I wanted for about $40 less per tire than what Sears or anyone else was selling it at.  And I know from my dad's work, that most manufacturers are required to send OEM quality tires to Sam's Club or they won't take them.  OEM just means they are the same quality of tires (highest end as far as I know) that go on a brand new vehicle.

    GL!

  • Oh no Nicole!  I hope that your DH can fix it this weekend.  Thank goodness that it wasn't you and Austin driving at the time.
