Babies: 9 - 12 Months

When did your DC wave & clap?

I went to my mom's group this morning and a mom's almost 8 month old waves, claps and crawls, says mom and dada. DC does neither of these. I was feeling pretty bad, even though the mom is so nice and she wasn't telling me to show off, we just hadn't seen each other in a while and were catching up.

What can I do to teach DS to clap & wave?

Re: When did your DC wave & clap?

  • They all do it at different ages and even if they do something early when they learn something else they can forget. DS started clapping around 7-8 months, it was super cute because I'd say YAY and he'd clap. Then for abot 2 months he completely forgot how to do it and has just started doing it again. He hasn't tried waving at all though.

To teach them all you can do is show them what to do repeatedly.

  • matthew takes my hands and claps them together, he doesn't clap or wave himself.

little stinker is all dadadaddadaaaaadadadada. no mama though :(

  • My 8 month old started clapping shortly before her 8 month birthday, but she still doesn't wave.

When she eats her breakfast, lunch, dinner (or finishes a bottle), we say Yay! and clap. Now she mimics us.

  • here is my experience with those two milestones.

everymoring after we get dressed and leave the nursery for the day we wave bye bye to the crib.  I used to wave his hand for him and then around 9 months he started doing this by himself.  ds just started clapping this week!  i was never really concerned b/c he uses his hands just fine and figured he just did not want to do it.  we used to clap our hands and clap his hands all the time and he would just laugh.  i started him part-time in an in-home daycare 3 weeks ago and he finally started clapping this week!  don't ask me if there is any correaltion but ds is much older than yours.  try not to worry or compare(i know it is so hard)  there is a broad spectrum for the normal range to hit milestones.  just to give you some relief ds was doing none of these at 8 months. oh- and the consistent babble started at 9 months.  mama started more like 10 months.

  • DS just started clapping about 2 weeks ago but it was a random thing. Just this past week he's started "purposefully" clapping if you sing to him or say yaaay or clap with him.  He's been saying dadadadadada forever but I think it's just babbling not really calling his Dada. He doesn't wave yet and hasn't even attempted Mama (despite my tries to teach him). He doesn't crawl yet, just rocks on all 4s, lunges forward, then gets back on all 4s again. He doesn't scoot either but we're working on it.  As far as teaching your DS, I think it's just time and repetition. Although, I think if they're not that interested they're not going to get it until they're ready.
  • DD started waving between 6-7 months and she'd use it in the right context but she didn't start clapping until recently (10-11 months). Every child is soooo different.
  • Sarah started waving and clapping at about 5.5 months.  She just started army crawling in the last few days.  She is in a daycare center 5 days a week where she is the youngest in the "infant" room.  The rest of the kids are at least 10 - 12 months old and I think watching the other kids do these things helps her do them earlier.

  • All kiddos are different. ?Looking at my developmental assessment, DS is still well within the typical age ranges for learning those skills.

DD started waving in imitation around a month ago and waved in response to a verbal "bye bye" a couple of weeks ago. ?She just started really clapping in the last week or two at most.?

  • DD started clapping and pointing at 9.5 months.

She first waved at 7 months, but I don't even know if it counts since she just raises her hand up. She doesn't actually wave her hand yet.

  • ds started clapping just this weekend.  he loves it :op  he waved bye bye to the daycare lady yesterday.  that was the first time i've seen him do it.  he'll wave his hands around all the time, but yesterday was an intentional bye bye wave.  so cute!
  • Ben doesn't clap yet.  He just started waving bye last week.  He does it when I am leaving after dropping him off at the sitters.  It's too cute.

Seriously, I wouldn't worry about it.  They all do things at different times.  It doesn't mean anything if he's later (or earlier) than other people's babies.

  • DD started clapping between 8-9 months, we clap all the time, especially when she falls down it distracts her from getting upset. She still doesn't wave. We haven't really taught her how to wave yet, so I don't expect her to just start doing it on her own. I have only started to move her arm and waving within the past few weeks.
  • DD just started clapping about a week ago, she doesn't wave yet nor does she crawl
  • My DS started clapping at 8 months old, but sporadically.  Now at almost 10 months old, he claps all the time.  He just started waving about 2 weeks ago.  Honestly, I have daycare to thank for that.  They taught him how to wave.  I do paddy cake with him at least once a day, but he doesn't really understand the hand coordination thing yet.  He only says DADA and no MAMA yet.

  • Repition is key.  My son started clapping around 7 months.  But, we clapped all the time.  Now around 10 months, he is picking up all of the motions plus the sign language.  He waves, claps, does "so big", and a bunch of sign language.
