How to clean a front loader washing machine?

I've read that you should run a bleach cycle but I don't want to use bleach in my house. Are there any other safer products I can use to clean the drum of my washer? It gets a little stinky every now and then, even leaving the door open after every wash.

  • Probably a hot wash with some vinegar would do the trick.

  • Check your manual - mine has a "tub clean" cycle you activate by holding down some other button, and it tells you not to use any detergent or bleach with that cycle. Maybe yours has something like that too.
  • I have a front-load washer too.  I run about a 1/4 cup of Borax in every load and never have a stinky washer.  You can find 100 Mule Team Borax usually in the laundry aisle at the grocery store.  Also, my washer has a cleaning cycle that runs on hot water or steam (not sure which).  Check your manual (or look up your model online) to see if you have a cycle like that.

  • Mine has a cleaning cycle that says BLEACH ONLY. I just put vinegar in the bleach spot  and run a cycle.

If you've tried everything and STILL have a stinky washer, you could try Affresh Tablets. They're stupid-expensive, but they seemed to do the trick on my washer and it's been over a month since I used it.

You can look online for them, or at an appliance store.

  • If it's the washer just run some Borax and vinegar in an empty load if yours doesn't have a 'clean' cycle.

If it's the seal on the front of the washer (which is the smelly part on ours) just use a mix of Borax and vinegar and scrub...
