MIL and I were looking at Will and Dash, and noting that Dash's hair is starting to get thicker now.
MIL: Dash's hair looks lighter than Will's.
Me: Yeah, it's just because there's not as much of it.
MIL: Oh well, it could be a different color.
Me: Umm...no, I'm pretty positive that they'll be the exact same. Identical, you know.
MIL: Well you never know. We have lots of redheads on my side of the family.
Me: Yeah I know. But I'm fairly certain they'll have the same color of hair.
MIL: Oh I don't know about that. I think it looks like it might be red.
Me: *sigh*
I've explained the whole "came from the same DNA" thing to her - but I'm not sure if she doesn't get it or just doesn't believe me.
Re: LOL - I don't think MIL really gets the whole identical twin thing

DAMMIT. I had this awesome post written for you and then my browser crashed. *sigh* I shall try to recap the brilliance...
Identical twins come from the same DNA, but once that cell divides, the twins develop independently (well, aside from sharing a placenta). Most of the time they'll look the same, but one twin can be thinner or shorter (especially if there was a problem with twin-to-twin transfusion). Those things - and even stuff like hair length - are influenced by environment, both in the womb and once they're born. But things like hair and eye color are genetically predetermined from that original cell, so those are always the same, as is gender. I hope I explained that clearly - it's a bit late at night here.
Will and Dash look waaaaay more alike if you ignore the hair, like so:
You can see what I mean about the hair - it makes a huge difference! There are some other subtle differences, mostly due to facial expressions (Dash tends to be more expressive and interactive than Will, who prefers to quietly watch things until he makes up his mind about them) and weight - Will's face is a bit chubbier because he weighs a little more and is chunkier all around.
P.S. I don't know if I've told you yet but OMG Alexa is cute in that siggy pic!
Oh... WOW! When you put the photos together like that they really do look identical! I get what you're saying. Again, sorry for the ignorance! Thanks for explaining! Maybe you should tell that to your MIL? She might just not have any experience with identical twins and not get that either. Not that I am defending her! Or want your posts about her silly comments to stop!
Btw, your photos are amazing. I am in love with your camera and editing software. And skills too! A neighbor friend who works with DH was taking pictures with a Nikon this weekend and I asked what kind... She was like, "Oh, I think it's a D90, something like that, not sure, I never use it, don't even know how to work the settings."
I was like... OMG. You have a top of the line professional camera and you act like it's nothing? I would LOVE a D90 but am trying to figure out how much I can spend. Some people.
And glad you like the siggy pic! The photographer who took that was only using a meager D40. :-)

This.
No problem! There were a lot of things I didn't know about twins before I had them.
You know, MIL and I have discussed the whole "came from the same DNA" thing before...and I've finally come to the conclusion that she's not being intentionally obnoxious - she just really and truly doesn't get it. She's not very...how do I put this? She's not stupid, just not well educated (didn't graduate high school) and although she's quite good at some things, grasping anything scientific doesn't seem to be one of them.
Thanks for the compliment about the photos! LOL I have to take about 100 pictures to get one good one (especially now that the boys are super squirmy lol).I I loooove my D90 - the only reason I was able to get it is because a friend who literally never used hers sold it to me at a steep discount. I'm still learning how to use it, and have to admit that I still leave it on Auto a fair amount of the time (especially when dealing with Will and Dash since they move so much).
hahaha..wonder if she doesn't get it or if she's being obnoxious LOL
i think they look sooo much alike, esp when you put the pics together like that...but i'm glad they have different hair b/c then i can tell them apart
