Newly Breastfeeding moms-how much sleep are you getting?

I have been averaging anything from 3 1/2- 5 hours per night.  My son was born a week ago & since my milk came in, I think he is more satisfied and calm after a feeding, leading to more sleep.  He still sleeps most of the day though and is most awake at night

  • Not enough!!  Big Smile  My LO has followedf the same pattern since we came home.  At first I was picking him up every time he whimpered. Then I read an article about how new moms do that and it causes baby to get less sleep, so since then I've been really trying to wait until I know he's up and wanting to eat.  He typically gets up 3 times during the evening.  If we have somewhere to be, I get between 3 and 4 hours of sleep because I stay up after his 5 a.m. nursing.  If we're not busy that day, I try to sleep in til 8, or SHOCK, one time 9!! So pretty much like you, 3 - 5 or so hours.  We're at 11 weeks right now.

  • @ first our LO was waking up every hour/ hour and a half. NOW I can get two three hour stretches in (with one waking), or a four hour block and a three hour.

How are you getting such long stretches in between? Any tips?

  • Well, we've been at it for a month now and I get a total of around 5 hours of sleep at night. Usually a three hour chunk and a two hour chunk. Thank god for naps or I'd be delirious.

  • I get about 6 or 7 hours! We're all asleep by 11 or 12, she wakes up again around 2 or 3am to eat and again around 7am. It's so great that she's finally on somewhat of a schedule! Then I'll try to get a nap in, but lately she's understood to be awake during the day so she needs me most of the day. Also I try to keep the house clean and laundry done and it depends on what appointments I have that day and errands, so most of the time I don't get a nap lol.

  • More than I expected!  She's asleep by 11:00 and sleeps at least four hours after that--the last two nights it's been six hours--and then anywhere from two to four hours in the next stretch.  Last night she was down at 10:30, we nursed at 4:30, and for the first time I am awake before she is this morning.  I'll be waking her up soon, though.  But, not bad for a 3 week old!

She does make up for it during the day, though--we can rarely go longer than two hours without feeding in the daytime.

  • My little monkey just started to sleep a lot more! Since my milk came in he now sleeps about 4hrs at a time, then wakes up for about 1-1.5hrs to eat and so forth, then goes back to sleep.
