Babies: 6 - 9 Months

has anybody heard of this?

a friend of mine is 8 weeks pregnant with her second baby, she went to the Dr today and they told her that they are going to induce at 36 weeks because her first baby was big...i think she was around 10 lbs. i just find this disturbing because 1) 36 weeks is SOOO early, thats not even technically full term...and 2) this baby could grow completely different then the first baby.

has anybody heard of this?

Re: has anybody heard of this?

  • I have never heard of this. DD was 9lb14oz , born at 37 weeks, (not induced) When I asked my Dr about having a 2nd baby, she said they would not make any decisions until close to the due date. Even then, she would not want to induce me if she didnt need to. C-section would most likely be scheduled but they would wait till close to the due date. I dont know why a Dr. would make a decision like that at 8 weeks . That just doesnt sound right to me, I would change Dr.s

  • If that's true and your friend is going along with it, everyone involved is extremely irresponsible. She's thinking of only herself and not the potential consequences to the baby.  I have no idea what the doctor is thinking--my guess would be lawsuits and not patient health.

I mean, FOR THE LOVE--it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that big baby =/= "ready" baby.  My son measured 9 1/2 pounds at my 36.5 week ultrasound.  He weighed 11 pounds, 10 ounces at birth.  Despite my already high-risk status due to severe pre-e and HELLP Syndrome with my first son, my MFM would not pull the trigger a moment before 39 weeks.

I get it.  It's not fun to carry a big baby.  Been there.  I'm sorry for your friend, but I have no sympathy.  Man the eff up.  If you have to have a c-section, so be it.  It's not the end of the world.  Been there too.  Sorry, guess this post hit a nerve with me.  I hate inductions for "big baby."

Sorry about that.  I think I got a little carried away there.  I can totally see why women would go with this, though.  You're at the end of pregnancy, you're begging to be done.  Your doctor gives you a pass, you take it, right?  I would have gone for it, too--except I had a late-term preemie who spent 2 weeks in the NICU.  That experience changed my life.  Now, I want to jump down the throat of any OB who does an induction for non-medical reasons, and "big baby" doesn't qualify to me.  Too often we're allowing doctors to induce and moms end up going through hours and hours of pointless labor only to end up in c-sections that could have been avoided.  There's a reason the United States has such a high rate of c-section.  Babies will come when they are ready.  Period.

  • Did your friend have a complicated birth with her first child?  During the birth of my 1st DD, shoulder dystocia occured which is actually dangerous and frightening (basically, her shoulder got stuck and a nurse actually had to jump on top of me and apply suprapubic pressure in order to get her delivered).  When I was pg with DD#2, I was told that if I wanted to I could be induced around 38-39 weeks, before the baby got too large for my pelvis, in order to try and avoid another dystocia.  However, I never made it that far - I ended up being induced at 37 weeks due to PIH and potential HELLP syndrome.
