Hawaii Babies

do i need a diaper genie or the like?

We still have not decided whether we'll use cd or disposable diapers. Assuming with use sposies, do I HAVE TO to buy a diaper genie or something similar? Can we use a regular trash can (dedicated for diapers)? If so, do we need to use special trash bags ore regular trash bags will do? We have an extra stainless steel trash can (with lid) so DH was wondering if we can use that for diapers?

Sorry for the stupid question. I really am clueless Tongue Tied

  • No, I don't think you need any specialty item. For the month we used sposies, we threw diapers in a small covered stainless steel can and emptied it every night. It was the size of regular grocery bags, so we also saved ourselves from having to buy special bags or refills. Worked perfectly fine! Stick out tongue

  • You can absolutely use a regular trash can! We have a "diaper pail" (marketed as such) that I only bought because it was only $10 and we didn't have a spare trash can to use. I want to replace it with something metal though because plastic absorbs odors.

ETA: oh, and I don't even use trash bags - I use the plastic ones from the grocery store (we don't have bag recycling in our area so at least this way we get an extra use out of them before they get tossed).

  • Thank you! This is really good to know!! We do not want to buy a diaper pail if our regular stainless steel trash can will work fine. Also good to know that we don't have to use special trash liners :-). Unfortunately, we don't use plastic grocery bags anymore (in DC, you pay $0.05 for each plastic grocery bag so we always bring our own recycle bag).

I'm sure you could get some from freecyclers/craigslisters outside of DC proper - or maybe even if you have coworkers that come from the burbs?

Good point!! That's definitely an option. Thanks!!
