Do you use bribes for the potty chair?

We're working on potty training our 2 yr. old & we've normally given him and m&m here and there, but now that we're trying underwear & sitting every hour, I feel like that's an awful lot of candy/chocolate. I have jelly beans too, but that's probably just as bad.  I don't see him being excited about stickers at all. He definitely needs immediate satisfaction so I need to give him something for now.

Are there any healthy snacks he likes but doesn't get often?

  • We used stamps, and Lily LOVED them. I bought a Melissa & Doug set off of Amazon and she could only get one stamp for each time she went on the potty. She totally dug it.

  • Were using stickers. I totally scored at the dollar section at Target! But for right now she is only going after her bath no intrest otherwise.

  • And it may loose its power if you have to use it often

I can't see your ticker.  Maybe you should just wait a while until he has more intrinsic motivation and you don't have to 'bribe' him.

  • We called it "incentive" lol.  Yes, mine both got small treats when they went on the potty- I'd switch it up if they got bored, but we did choc chips, mini marshmallows, jelly beans, etc.  We did sticker charts as well, but they def were more excited about the sweet stuff.  Honestly- I'd do whatever works.  Eventually- once going potty becomes more the 'routine' than the new thing- they fall off of needing those rewards. Just keep them small rewards- it's not going to hurt him!
  • We started using m&ms every time my DS went on the potty, now he only gets one if he asks to go. We do stamps when I ask him and he goes.

  • i did a sticker book in the beginning, then turned to M&M's. if she went potty, she got an M&M. then the M&Ms wore off, she didnt ask, i didnt offer. she refused to poop in the potty, so we started with the M&Ms again. it worked as well.

i agree -- once it becomes routine, the treats fade out!
