I can't remember--has anyone here adopted?

We are attending an orientation @ a local agency in mid-July.  We've not made any solid decisions yet, but I am feeling strongly that we're going to pursue it.  SQUEEEE!!!

Re: I can't remember--has anyone here adopted?

  • there is a former knottie katlom whom I'm very good friends with.  She adopted from the foster system in Florida.  Her kids were older though.  She adopted 3 altogether.  If you want I can give you her email addy & you can talk to her.

  • wow, three together! Brave woman! LOL  We won't be adopting from the foster system, though; I worry too much about Ethan becoming attached to a child as a sibling & then having the parent come back into the picture and taking the child away.  That would be too much for him (and me, probably).
  • Check out the adoption board on here.  I've had it in the back of my mind too and have been lurking.  I'm excited for you!  I remember all you went through trying for a second.
  • she didnt adopt them all at the same time.  She adopted Jesse when he was 6.  A year later she adopted Jon who was 5. and just last year she adopted Samantha she was 4 or 5.

Even though she adopted from the foster care...she only was interested in kids whose parental rights were terminated so there was no chance of the child being taken away.

  • I have been over on the adoption board a bit already--its a great resource!
  • My cousin (also one of my best friends) and her husband (both white) have adopted 3 children....one biracial (at 10 weeks old) and 2 AA (both at birth).

They have used the same local agency for all 3, and all three were domestic (all in state) adoptions.  If you are interested, I'm sure she'd talk with you at length about it, especially if you are considering inter-racial adoption.  She's actually starting Law school in the fall to go into Adoption Law....her kids will be 3.5, 2.5 and 1!

Let me know if you'd like her contact info.

  • We had planned on adopting from China before the system got so screwed up that it takes over 3 yrs now.  When we went to our first orientation meeting at the agency (incidentally, the day I found out I was PG with DS), they were tracking about 10 months for China adoptions.  It turned out that if we had pursued the adoption starting then, we wouldn't have gotten the baby until DS was over 2 yrs old.  But there was no way to know that at the time.  Now, I wish we had done it then, but obviously it didn't seem like the right answer at the time.

    TheNextWest adopted her twins domestically.

  • My sister adopted her kids domestically.
  • Thanks for the information, ladies!  We are definitely going w/ domestic adoption, for a lot of reasons. I'll keep you posted!
  • Makinroom4baby adopted her son Jayden from birth.  I'd say PM her but she's on vacay right now and probably won't check her PMs.  I'll tell her you're looking for info if you'd like.
  • makinroomforbaby is the only one I can think of.  Her Jayden was born just a few days before Blaire.
  • My sister and BIL adopted my BIL's half brother and sister (kinship adoption) when they were seven. It's been a wonderful experience.

I work as a gov't contractor in social services and we manage this website: https://www.childwelfare.gov/nfcad/  It's a great resource.
