2nd Trimester

Weight Gain - Higher than Normal

I am just today at 21 weeks and have already gained nearing 30 pounds.  I have admittedly been working out less than my normal 2hours+ daily, but have been keeping active (at least 3+ trips to the gym, plus lots of walks, yard work, etc) and eating healthy - and probably about the same amount as I did pre-pregnancy, maybe even less.

I started out at about 107 (5'4") and gained about 15 pounds in the first trimester.  I know I shouldn't try to lose weight, but this big weight gain is complete torture, so I have been trying to keep my weight gain as low as possible each week.

My doctor says my weight gain has been a bit "generous" that my body was probably trying to play catch up, since I was on the low end of the BMI scale prior to pregnancy...

I am just wondering - is anyone else out there experiencing the same thing?  Has anyone else had this happen in a previous pregnancy, and if so, where did you end up in the end and how difficult was it to lose after the baby was born?  I'm seriously stressed because it seems like no matter how careful I am, more pounds than recommended keep packing on....

Re: Weight Gain - Higher than Normal

  • If your doctor isn't worried then you need to relax, ESPECIALLY if you were underweight to begin with.

Just keep being active, but don't over do it, and eating healthy.

It could be water weight too.  My MIL said she lost 40 pounds after she gave birth to my DH.  10 pounds of baby, 5 pounds of fluid/placenta, and then over the hospital stay another 25 pounds of just water weight that we body was holding on to, nothing you can do about that.

  • I am with you on the 30 lbs. weight gain. I have put on 30 lbs. so far. But I had been working out hard core and dieting before I got pregnant for my wedding so my weight wasn't where is normally would have been. My Doctor keeps telling me not to worry about it. He recommended daily walks for 30+ minutes and making sure I am eating healthy. Your body is going to do what your body is going to do when you are pregnant.

  • I'm 26 weeks and up 32 lbs.  My doc did warn me this last appt. to knock out the carbs and try to be more careful.  I do walk daily but have placenta previa and can't do anything strenous.

But I feel good and the baby is measuring spot-on, and honestly?  You can tell from my pic below (taken yesterday) that it's not like I'm completely blowing up.  It's almost like my body needed to do that so I can be at a healthy weight for my growing babe (I was also slightly under weight/BMI at the start).

  • This happened to a co-worker of mine. She ended up gaining around 45 pounds despite religiously watching what she ate. She too was small like you. I know it is hard to see the scale go up, but take comfort in the fact that you are exercising and eating healthy. If you are really worried, see if your doctor can recommend any special eating plans. Hang in there mama.

  • I'm having a very similar experience. I'm at the start of my 17th week and have already put on about 15 pounds.  I started at 5'3" and 107 pounds.  I quit smoking, stopped going to the gym (too tired!) and am eating more.  My doc warned me that I was gaining a little fast and cautioned about carbs.  I'm trying to eat healthier now and get in some exercise.  i do think, however, that a low BMI to begin with leaves you prone to more weight gain than usual.
  • Hey!  A weight post I can finally relate to!  I am 27 weeks and up 34lbs.  I have been food journaling and exercising, but the last few weeks I've gained 2lbs per week.  When I was 20 weeks I was at about 20lbs gained.

I gained 80lbs with my first pregnancy and lost it all within 4 months.  I would need to gain ALOT during the next 13 weeks to be where I was last time, so that I'm grateful for!

Stay active, eat healthy and gain what you need to.  If you put the effort in afterwards, the weight will come off.

    This!

  • I have a girlfriend who is underweight and is in her first tri and freaking out at her weight gain. Her OB is totally fine with it though, and since she's eating the same, it's obviously what her body wants to do. I know it's hard to see the scale creep up when you work so hard to stay in shape and thin, but with the dedication you have to your health you will surely get back in shape easily once the baby is here. For now, be kind to yourself and keep reminding yourself that gaining weight is healthy.
  • When I was pregnant with DS I started out at 105lbs and gained about 44lbs. My OB always said I needed the extra weight because I was so small prepregnancy and my body needed it. I think if the doctor isn't worry, you shouldn't be either!!

It's okay! It sounds like you started out at a low weight, also. With my DS, I gained between 45-50 pounds...I am 5'10", and weighed 150 when I got pg with him. I only lost about 20 pounds after he was born, until he hit 6 months and I started working out for real. I was back to my starting weight when he turned one. I then continued lose weight, and was 140 when I got pg with this kid. I've gained 25 pounds so far (And 10 of that was between 16-20 weeks - aieee). I've resigned myself to the fact that my body just puts on weight when I'm pregnant.

It's really hard gaining a lot of weight, I totally understand. I feel better this pg, bc I know I lost all the weight after DS was born, but when I was pregnant with him, it was difficult watching the scale go up and up.

Stay away from empty calories, eat protein (as opposed to carbs) when you get hungry (eggs and peanut butter are my BFFs right now, ha!), and stay active. You can lose the baby weight, even though it might take longer - remind yourself you're gaining this over a nine-month span. hth

  • I'm a small built person and I gained 41 lbs with my DD. It stressed me out at first, but my doc was reassuring in that some people do need to gain a little more. I'm still nursing her and the weight came off quickly when I went back to my normal routine.

Don't stress now, your body is doing what it has to. As long as you're eating healthy and getting some decent exercise it will all even out in the end.

  • Thanks for this post!  I have been feeling the same way lately, so it's great to hear the reassurance!  I too was on the low end of BMI (5'9" and 132), so I think it's normal...

  • You're fine! I know it's hard not to stress but you started out very small, my dr. told me if you are small/under weight it's ok to gain more weight and you should gain more weight than normal.

  • This was me during my 1st pregnancy.  I had been working out a lot/watching what I ate due to my wedding.  Got pg 2 months later and I was so tired, I just slept all the time instead of going to the gym.  Plus, I was relying on carbs to keep the nausea away.  I ended up gaining a total of 42 lbs.
  • If you're eating healthily then your body is just doing what it needs to do. I wouldn't be concerned at this point, especially since you were tiny to begin with.

  • I was a whale during my first pregnancy (think almost 70 pounds).  I didn't eat especially bad my body just piled on the pounds anyway.  However, I did retain a lot of water starting in the second trimester and had the worst cankles known to man.  Good news is, the weight really just fell right off after the baby was born and I was back to my pre pregnancy weight within 12 weeks.  Of course my pre pregnancy weight was a bit higher than I would have liked.  This time around I've only gained 14 so far and am almost 22 weeks.  I think it helps that I have a toddler to chase around.  I started at the same prepregnancy weight again as well so after this baby comes and the "shop is closed" so to speak I plan to take off all that I gained plus an additional 20-25 pounds.  I'm so looking forward to actually working out again but I am enjoying the fact that my weight seems more manageable this time around.
  • I gained 60 lbs with my first pregnancy. My normal is 5'8" and 132. However, I did absolutely nothing to loose it and lost every pound. This time i'm watching what I eat and active chasing my 18 month old around, yet I seem to be gaining around the same (slightly less). It's all concentrated in my belly this time instead of everywhere.

I say, don't worry about it. Sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. I eat the same as i did pre-preg (and i never gained weight then). As long as your ob isn't worried, i wouldn't be.

    Ditto.

  • I am with you.  I am 5'6" and have been around 1115-120 my whole life ... except pregnant.  This is my 3rd baby and I am already up 30+lbs.  I will not even look at the scale, so I am not 100% positive.  I do know that I am ahead right now compared to where I was at 29 weeks with my first son and  26 weeks with my second son. My OB isn't worried at all, but it kills me. I just don't understand why I gain almost 50lbs each time.  Thankfully, I have lost it and then some each time.   It's hard to even look in the mirror ..... I just don't recognize myself. I also workout 5-6x a week for 1-2 hours and maintain being active while pregnant.
  • I have a friend who was literally stick thin before she was pregnant with her first (she's athletic and naturally thin) and she gained 70 pounds with her first son. She lost it all extremely quickly, to the point that you would never know she had given birth.

With her second son, she gained only half that much and also lost it all within a few weeks!

My sister was the same exact height and weight as you before she got pregnant the first time and she gained over 40 pounds, lost it all (without even trying) and gained even more with the second one, and then lost it all again without even trying.

Since you started off quite small, your body might just be compensating now and will drop it all after. If your doctor isn't worried, don't worry!

  • This happened to a friend of mine. With both of her kids she gained 65 lbs. She was small, like you, to begin with. And she lost the weight fairly quickly both times. If your Dr. isn't worried and you know that you are doing all (or mostly) the right things, I wouldn't worry about it.
  • I'm not sure how to post on my own post, but wanted to thank everyone who responded - it definitely helps me feel a bit better!
