January 2011 Moms

I pretty much had to ask to hear the heartbeat today

Today was my second checkup.  I peed in the cup, did weight and blood pressure, and then waited for the doctor.  She came in, said everything looked good, and then asked if I've been feeling ok.  I could tell that was pretty much the end of the appointment, so I mentioned that I've been anxious since my symptoms disappeared.  She said, "are you nervous?" and when I said yes she grabbed a doppler.  She said it might be too early to hear the hb (plus I'm overweight), but she found it pretty quickly.  I was so relieved :).  I go back in two weeks to see her and have my NT scan.

Did anyone not get to see/hear the heartbeat at their second appointment?  I was surprised when I realized she wasn't planning on it.

  • I went in on Tuesday and she said it was too early for the doppler (9w, 5d) so they are having me come back on Monday to hear it (hopefully!)

  • I'm having my second appointment on July 7th ( will be 12w) and the nurse told I will get to hear the LO heart beat again then.

  • I didn't, I was 12 weeks and she said that she doesn't start dopplers until after the 12 week appt because we may not be able to hear it yet.
  • Interesting.  My 2nd appointment is next month but I will be sure to ask if my doc doesn't look like he's going to do it.  Thanks for the heads up!

  • I got to hear mine. But I just wanted to tell you congrats on hearing your LO and you have a very beautiful little girl.
  • I didn't, but my second appointment was at 8w3d so I wasn't surprised.
  • I heard the hb on my first appointment via doppler, I was around 9-9.5 weeks.

  • My Dr. tried to get a heartbeat at 10w2d on the doppler but couldn't find it so he gave me an u/s the next day to calm my nerves (baby was fine).  My next appointment isn't for another 2 weeks so I'm hoping he gives me a doppler...if not I'll def. ask for it just because I want to hear the heartbeat

  • I had to ask every time. You'd think they'd know every single mother to be is nervous and a little scared and looks forward to hearing the heartbeat.
  • Most Dr/MWs won't even try until 12 weeks or later because it's so early to hear it and they don't want mamas to get anxious. :)  Glad you got to hear it though!!

  • I got to hear at 10 weeks, but my doc warned me beforehand that she might not be able to find it that early.

Congrats on hearing your LO's heartbeat though!  Isn't it amazing???

I know I shouldn't have expected it, but I swear that she did did and u/s or used the doppler at this point last time.  However, I had an emergency u/s around 10 or 11 weeks last time for bleeding, and now I think that must be what I'm thinking of.  I was very thankful to hear the heartbeat.

I had an appt Monday when I was 9w5d and she found the hb on the doppler

  • My next appt is at 12wks 4days and my OB told me they'd do an ultrasound (guessing NT scan) and we'd get to hear the heartbeat. I will want to hear the heartbeat at every appt after that actually.
