Using the diapers from diaper cakes?

I promise I have more important decisions going on right now, but I will admit that this one has stumped me and my pregnancy fog has me unable to make a decision and move on.

I have two diaper creations.  One has 90+ diapers in a cake and the other has 20+ diapers on a attached to a painted wire wreath. My showers were 4-6 weeks before my due date and were in the home of a cat owner (I am allergic to cats).

Do normal clearheaded mommies just use the diapers and not think twice about it?  Or is it common sense to just toss them thinking that the creations have collected dust that I don't want near little one?  Is there some other use for them that I am not thinking of (I am having a boy so would I want to use them as shields when changing)?

Re: Using the diapers from diaper cakes?

  • Someone made me a diaper cake for my shower and there were also diapers in the centerpieces on the table for my shower. My shower was 5/16 so around 6 weeks before due date. I plan on using the diapers from both as long as LO doesnt have a reaction.

I would make sure there is no pet hair on the diapers and use them?

  • I had two diaper cakes and used all the diapers.  Once you start buying diapers you will realize how expensive they are and how precious free diapers is.  That is my 2 cents.  I didn't worry about dust/germs.  They were brand new.

  • I would totally use them.  As for having a boy and needing to use them as shields, it will depend on your LO, but my son has only peed without his diaper on once and it was during a bath (it hit the wall!) so I take my chances and just move quick :-)

I am definitely using mine. I'm allergic to cats and I have two cats. I didn't become allergic to cats though until I was an adult.

This, at some point you will realize that a diaper is a diaper. It is not like it was outside in the rain or that they have been used. The person who made it bought new diapers made the diaper cake and then gave it to you.

    I plan to use mine.
  • Diapers are for collecting poop - dust doesn't have a fighting chance!
  • You should use them! If you're against it, please donate them instead of contributing to more and more environmental waste!
  • I got THREE diaper cakes at my shower. They're ALL size 1 & 2, so there is NO way I'm letting those go to waste!! There was over 200 diapers in total!! My wonderful mother so graciously unrolled ALL of them and stored them in an airtight Rubbermaid container...I'll just use those ones first, since they've already been taken out of the package...

  • Oooh- good idea unrolling them ahead of time! My diaper cake was made out of the Pampers Dry Max but I'm still planning on using them unless LO has a reaction.

  • I got two from friends and I already unrolled the NB size diapers, and I'm saving the Size 1-2 diaper cake for later (plus it's so pretty). I have to admit unrolling them was a pain in my a** though. I also had to try to flatten them out with a container of wipes sitting on top.

  • Use them!  That's what they're there for.  Just make sure you have pics of the diaper cake before you take it apart.

  • I would definatley use them!! Oh and for a shield... what I did with my son was I always had a small stack of washclothes on the changing table. I would just use that to cover in case he tried to spray me. I think they worked great!! He rarely did but I always had them just in case :)
  • We absolutely used them. It was over 100 diapers for free! When DC is going through a TON of diapers a week, a free diaper is a GOOD thing.

  • Use them up.  Diapers are not cheap!
