Laura

WDYT of Laura? Is it too 80s? I think it is pretty but don't know if it screams 80s or something.

Re: Laura

  • It's okay. I prefer Lauren.

  • My name is Laura and I was born in the early 70s and named after my grandmother born in the early 1900s. So I don't think it's 80s at all. In fact, I know very few adult Laura's. I LOVE my name. I think it's classic (if you look at the name stats it's been around for decades) and I like that it's not very popular or trendy.

  • I think a name like Laura is a good fit for some people. Think about it this way - others wouldn't have a hard time pronouncing it, but she wouldn't be one of many in her class.

I do know many Laura's from the late 70s and 80s, but also one or two from the 90s.

  • I don't think '80s. I think Laura Ingalls Wilder.
  • I really like the name Laura.  It would be a contender for a future DD, but it was the name of DH's ex.  I think it's a lovely, classic name and definitely not tied to any particular era.

  • Well, my name is Laura so I guess I'm pretty fond of it.  I'm an early 80's baby.  I think it's a classic name.  I really like the name Lana (lah - nuh), but I could never use because it sounds too close to my name.  On a side not I also love the name Max, but my DH's name is Matt so that's out too.  Ha!

  • I like it - it doesn't scream 80s to me like Jennifer or Heather (my apologies to any Jennifers or Heathers here), plus it has some good associations - Laura Ingalls and my personal favorite, The Glass Menagerie.

  • Its my name too!  My only problem with having the name is that everyone pronounces it different.  Most people say Lora instead of Laura.
  • I love it (but I'm biased.  Laura is my 11yo sister's name).  It reminds me of my own name (Caroline) because everyone has heard it, but I don't actually know any other Caroline's (or Laura's) in my (or her) circle.

This drives me crazy!  I've tried to explain this to my inlaws a million times and they don't even  hear a difference.  I told them its like the name Lars without the S.  Then they try to say it and they say Laaaaaara.

Well I feel like I failed Laura 101. In my experience with Lauras, it's Lora, and Lara is well....Lara. I mean, Laurel is pronounced Lor-el, so now I'm confused.

Hell, Laura is my name and I pronounce it like "Lora," so I guess I fail, too! I think it's regional, though. They sound exactly the same to me. Lara and Lars sound the same to me as well.  I'm from the Midwest, so it's probably just my "accent."

  • My name is Laura, and I like it. I pronounce it "Lora." Also, it's funny that everyone mentions Laura Ingalls, because we are related and I am named after her.

  • I like Lauren better.

If we have another daughter, I would like to name her Lauren Elizabeth.

  • I'm a  born in '81 Laura (and prefer Laura...not Lora...side note.) Anyway...she would probably be the only one in her class with the name, but it's not a weird/unusual name (ok, I'm biased:)   My parents liked the name Laura after watching Dr. Zhivago, and my grandma's cousin was named Laura.

  • I have an aunt named Laura who was born in '48.  I can think of 2 other Lauras I know of off the top my head (both pronounce it Lora) that were born in the mid-late 70s.

    I think it's a pretty, timeless name.
