When I got pregnant, my SIL who just had a baby gave me a tonnnn of advice, along with all of the things that we can't eat/drink while pregnant. Some of the things she told me were: lunchmeat, tuna, hot dogs, green tea. I have not had these things so far, but I see on a lot of the lunch/dinner posts and see that some of you girls are eating these things. I'm just curious if my SIL was just ultra-strick or if it really is best to avoid these foods. Thanks ladies!!
Re: Foods that we "can't" have
<--- Hot dog gir here. I gotta have it with ketcup, mustard, and relish. It wasn't on my list of things I shouldn't eat by my Dr. I don't have them all the time but I do have them especially when the bbq grill is out!

My dr. told me that I needed to have a balanced diet. His only nos were: no more than 1 meal of tuna every few weeks, no more than 2-3 servings of shrimp every week, no fish- unless tuna, no shellfish, no soft cheeses at all (cream cheese in the US is okay- it is pasteurized), no raw eggs, no bacon, hot-dogs, salami, and only eat deli meat that is prepackaged, do not buy if from the deli in the grocery store- unless you plan on eating it hot, do not eat it from a restaurant unless it has been heated. I had heard that there was so much more that you "couldn't, shouldn't eat". I have always heard NO caffeine, but when I was in the hospital for dehydration they told me caffeine was ok in small portions. I read somewhere you can have up to 3 8oz cups of coffee before the caffeine will start to pass through the placenta.
My sister drank diet coke through out her pregnancy because her dr told her that she should eat like she would any other day of the week. - I did not agree with this, but she listened to her dr (avoiding the obvious-raw eggs, sushi, etc) Anyway her 15 month old is in perfect health!
It depends on the type of tuna. Chunk Light tuna is fine 2x a week, Albacore only 1x a week.
You can have hot dogs - just heat them thru. Same with lunch meat (though some of us walk on the wild side and have that cold).
Feta cheese (and other "soft" cheese) are perfectly fine if the label specifies it comes from pasteurized milk.
Most store-bought eggs are pasteurized these days and are considered safe to eat soft-boiled or raw. Again, check the label.
I would continue to avoid green tea or have it in very limited amounts. The reason it's restricted is because it inhibits folic acid uptake.

My advice would be to ask your doctor since everyone's doctor tells them something different. As for lunchmeat, my doctor said it was perfectly fine and didn't need to be heated up. She said lunchmeat from the deli is fine also, just not to buy from a local mom & pop shop that makes their own. As for cheese, anything pasturized is fine. I'm sure there are people who do not agree with this, but I'm going with what my doctor says. She delivered my sister's 3 kids and all are healthy!
Hmm...my prior post posted twice :
Anyhow...I found this online.
? Hot dogs and luncheon meats: Hot dogs are generally high in nitrates, as well as fat and sodium ? but it's safe to enjoy one now and then, provided it's fresh off the grill or has otherwise been cooked until steaming hot (to at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit) to kill bacteria that may be present. Also be sure to handle the juice that comes from hot-dog and deli-meat packaging carefully. Don?t let it come in contact with foods that won?t be cooked, and wash your hands thoroughly after handling it.
Luncheon and deli meats also need to be reheated until they're steaming hot to be safe.
Me too. Actually I rarely drink green tea (I used to drink so much of it that eventually I got sick of it so I've switched to black teas). Other than alcohol and cuban coffee (caffeine overload), I'm having trouble thinking of anything I've had to turn down because I'm pregnant. I'm not eating hot dogs every day, but like flgirl said, it's all about moderation for me.
Me too! I love them, but don't have them all the time. I will be having one tonight at a BBQ. I have been making extra sure though that it is well done. Yum! I'm excited!!!
I just had a tuna sandwich for lunch. I eat lunchmeat regularly and now that you mention it, I kinda want a hot dog.Maybe well do hot dogs and french fries for dinner.
Does that help? Haha.

Maybe because green tea has caffeine? Caffeine is ok in moderation (i.e. you could probably have a cup or two of tea per day, but don't drink a gallon of it.)
ETA: Nevermind. People smarter than me figured it out.
I just ate a turkey sandwich from Panera. It was amazing.
This
I tend to weight the risk of something actually happening v. whether I will or will not do something.
Lunchmeat/hot dogs- The risk of listeria poisoning is extremely low. There are a few hundred cases of it annually in the entire US. I eat lunchmeat from reputable places, where it's sliced in front of me. (IE- not subway lunch meat that came to them sliced and sits out for however long...)
Tuna- moderate tuna is fine... the risk is high doses of mercury... there's nothing wrong with eating a few oz/ week.
Green tea- I think she's talking about the fact that green tea blocks folic acid.... it doesn't block it indefinitely. To make sure this isn't a problem, I have a cup of green tea after dinner, take my vitamins in the AM (12+ hours later) Dr OK'd this, said Green tea doesn't effect the system any longer than it's in the system.
I do suggest you stay away from heroin and whiskey though. ;-)
Always such wise words of wisdom.
And yes, I second the notion of staying away from heroin and whiskey. Bad stuff.

I missed you and I'm glad you're back.
You know, Im glad I am too. Ive missed you too. Youre by far one of my favorite people around!

::blushes and kicks ground:: You're just sayin' that....
The only cooked deli meat I will eat is from Firehouse Subs. Otherwise heated up meat is just nasty.

I eat tuna almost everyday for lunch, turkey sandwich from PANERA for lunch when i'm not eating tuna and hot dogs every once in a blue moon for dinner. My word of advice every woman is different and every doctor has their opinion. I eat what I want when I want it. I stick to my 3 basics, NO RAW, NO ALCOHOL, NO DRUGS! My baby is one happy camper.
Well I wouldnt eat tuna EVERYDAY. I think thats excessive in regards to mercury.
Cooper+Evie=Soulmates

that's why i said almost everyday i mix it up the point is i have it atleast 2-3 times a week and every check up i had everything is healthy, but like i said every woman is different and every doctor has their own opinion.
