Non-feminine sounding Girl Names

My husband wants to name our baby girl Harper.  I think it's cute, but I'm having a hard time with it because it's not very feminine sounding.  What are some example of other non-feminine names?  I think if I could relate a non-feminine name to a person I know, or have heard of, it might help me envision our daughter with a not-so-feminine-sounding name...

Re: Non-feminine sounding Girl Names

  • If we'd had a girl, she would have been named Gretchen.  I love it, but a lot of people think it's not a very pretty sounding name.  But it's very underused and normal, IMO.

  • Over the weekend, I met a really cute and feminine girl named Evan. NMS but it truly seemed to fit her perfectly!

  • I really like the name Harper, but IMO don't name DD Harper if you can't envision her as that. Don't settle on a name you don't really like.

Non-feminine names- Ryan (I love this for a girl), Piper, Taylor

  • Three of my favorite names for a girl are Reese, Carson, and Sutton. As a teacher, I knew female students named Carson and Sutton, and they were dolls!

  • When I think of non-feminine...I think unisex...so maybe look at unisex names on baby name sites.
  • I really like the name Harper. It's unique and definitely not too feminine sounding. We are leaning towards the name Eden.

Sutton is one of my fave girl names, too! But DH nixed it. I'm trying to convince my friend to name one of her twins Sutton. ;)

I'm really bummed that Evan is becoming a girl's name. Ugh.

Sorry! If it helps, she was in HS, so maybe she's a female Evan oddity :)

  • I knew a girl in school named Harley. And Paytin is becoming very common for girls.

  • I think Harper sounds feminine, but then again that's my daughter's name so I associate it with a really sweet little girly girl :) It's no less feminine sounding than Jennifer or Heather to me now.

I LOVE Sutton (someone suggested that above, I know, but it's so cute). Piper, Emerson, Emery, Ainsley, Reese, Quinn, and Teagan are a few others I liked that kind of fit in that category.

  • Some others that aren't superfeminine:

    Amber

    Carly

    Addison

    Riley

    Sadie

    Here are others ...

    Good luck!

  • I am from the south and there are a lot of little girls with family names as their first name (I am assuming it's a southern thing). Collins, Ryan, Evans, Hadley, etc.  I also know a lot of girls with "unisex" names too.  Austin, Alex, Tyler, Avery.  All cuties!  I think you will be fine as long as you like the name.  Plus you could name your daughter something very feminine and elegant and then she might hate dresses and be a tom boy.  You just never know.  Wink

  • Cameron Diaz, Taylor Swift, and Reese Witherspoon are all good examples of feminie women with not-so-feminine names.  I like Harper a lot!
  • I like Harper for a girl! Jordan, Morgan.. I know girls named Hunter, Ryann, and Holdin. My daughter's name is Brayden.

  • While I'm not a huge fan of Harper myself, I like it far better than the... creative... ones that I've been seeing rise in popularity.  If you like "Harper" but just need help reconciling it, To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee, who was a female author.

  • How about Maren, Emerson, or Sloane?

  • I LOVE the name Ryan for a girl!  And to make it a little more feminine, you could spell it Ryann.  It was my top name, but DH refuses to name a girl that- Boo!!!
  • I am a big fan of girl's names that aren't super feminine!  I have a female friend named Ryann and another named Logan.  If we have a girl, one of our top picks for a name is Emerson.  I think Harper is adorable!  If you're worried about it not being super feminine, you could always pair it with an obviously girly middle name.
  • there are a ton of girls named harper.
  • Our friends just named their little girl Scout.  It's so tomboy- I love it!
  • Riley, Ryan, Quinn, Theodora, Dylan

    BTW I like Harper

My son watches a show "wizards of Waverly Place"  A girl on the show is named Harper.  So I know it as a girl name.
