New to BG and have questions!

I bought 12 BG so we can start cloth diapering and I have questions so I don't do this thing wrong:

1. Do you think 12 is enough if I do laundry every other day?

2. Seventh Generation detergent ok to use? If not, I think I'll just make my own detergent to save moola.

3. How can I make my own cloth wipes? Anyone still use their disposables? Where do you throw them away?

4. Wet bag recs for the pail? That are cheap?

5. Can someone explain how you wash your BG's?

Thanks so much...I know I'm clueless! I guess starting out is a little daunting!

Re: New to BG and have questions!

  • 1. Nope.  Not at our house.  I have 9 BGs, 12 prefolds, 2 fitteds and 6 covers... and some days, we cut it short on laundry.

    2.  I don't think its on the list of "safe" detergents.  I'm 99% sure of that...

    3. Just cut up some fabric into the right size.  You can finish the edges by folding under and sewing around.. or you can make them double thick (my fave).  Fave fabrics are flannel, birdseye cotton, terry, cotton jersey knit and minky (not for me, but I've seen others like it).  You could use old blankets even.  My grandma just brought me a grocery bag full of flannel scraps from making receiving blankets.  I LOVE them and can't wait to grab some terry for the other side!  Its not much fun to use disposable wipes with a cloth diaper, IMO.  Its easier to just toss them both into the same pail.

    4. HappyJacks on etsy *may* make them, but I'm not sure... I get my other wetbags from her... LOVE her.  Can't wait to meet her soon!  I bought my pail liners from Abby's Lane... Wahmies... that was before I knew HappyJacks had them.

    5. I scrape any poo with a plastic knife into the toilet.  Swish the knife in the water, wipe it clean with a small piece of TP.  Flush poo, store knife under sink.  Then remove microfiber insert(s) from BG and toss everything into the diaper pail.  With my toploader, I would dump in the whole pail and turn the liner inside out.  I'm run a cold rinse cycle.  Then I'd do a hot wash with detergent and a cold rince (one cycle).  And then do another rinse.  Now that I have a front loader, I put the diapers in, set it to do a prewash (cold), hot wash (with detergent) and cold rinse... and I use the "extra water" button.  Then I do a rinse/spin cycle with the "extra water" button.

  • I bought 12 BG so we can start cloth diapering and I have questions so I don't do this thing wrong:

    1. Do you think 12 is enough if I do laundry every other day? How old is your baby? If you have a newborn, 24 would be enough to do laundry every other day, 12 would be sufficient for a toddler/older baby.

    2. Seventh Generation detergent ok to use? If not, I think I'll just make my own detergent to save moola. I'm not sure, but I use Rockin Green, which is made specifically for CDs and smells WONDERFUL.

    3. How can I make my own cloth wipes? Anyone still use their disposables? Where do you throw them away? You can make them out of old receiving blankets, or you can buy fabric and hem them. DH uses disposable wipes, and he just throws them in the regular trash.

    4. Wet bag recs for the pail? That are cheap? You can look on Diaper Swappers for a slightly used one if you want to go really cheap.

    5. Can someone explain how you wash your BG's? I do a cold pre-rinse, then a normal hot wash with detergent, and then another hot wash without detergent. Then I stick them in the dryer until they are dry!

  • 1. I would say for every other day washing, no. I would want probably around 18 for every other day wash.

    2. I don't think so. I use Tiny Bubbles. I just bought a 6 pack from Costco for $60 (online) but I usually buy from Amazon for free shipping :)

    3. I use the Gerber baby washcloths and back with flannel. If I use disposables I just toss them in the trash can.

    4. I love Planet Wise. If you go to www.clothdiaperclearance.com they sell seconds there. I have a couple seconds and they work just fine :)

    5. depends on your washing machine. I have a FLing HE machine and I do a cold rinse/spin cycle, then a hot wash with a cold rinse and an extra rinse. I use the heavy soil and extra water options as well. I put in 1.5 scoops of detergent and a half a scoop of oxiclean in every load as well.

I have been CDing since DD was 8 months old (she's now 26 months) and I am now also CDing DS. Wash routines are a LOT of trial and error but once you get it figured out, stick with it. GL!

  • I wash every other day and was 20-25 every time

I use the raspberry pail line https://clothdiaperclearance.com/catalog.php?category=465

I use old flannel for wipes

I do 1st a cold wash to get rid of EBF poo, then I do a hot wash and line dry
