So....
I know strollers are an essential and that a good stroller is something we definitely need since we live in the city and walk everywhere, all of the time but apparently I was a little naive about their prices. I had no idea I would end up spending more on a stroller than I will on a crib that the kid will sleep in every.single.day for like the next 2 years....anyone else choke on some of the prices? Especially after you add all of the attachments that you 'need'.
Wow, they weren't kidding...babies are expensive!
Re: Anyone else side eye-ing stroller prices??
Well, it also depends on how much you spent on a crib
If I spent more on a stroller than I did on our crib, I think my H would shoot me. There's something to be found in every price range and I think you start with what you're willing to spend and start there first.
If you can spend $800-1000 on a stroller, you don't *need* to if you can find something that you works just as well as a $500 stroller.
FTR: "you" means a general you, not the OP specifically.
What strollers are you looking at?
The travel system we're considering is $250, without bargain shopping. Looking at the price of the infant car seat, that would make the stroller portion about $100....

She lives in a city so frankly, a travel system will not work that great.
We are also in the city and were initially shocked. Someone then told us that a stroller to us would be like a car to someone in the burbs. I will take my $700 stroller anyday. And my friends have all said that a good quality stroller with real wheels is worth every penny.
My point was the stroller doesn't cost that much.
Looking at full-sized strollers on BRU, you can find plenty for $150-$200, including Peg Perego, Mia Moda, Chicco....
I mean, if you want to drop half a grand on a stroller you'll only use for 3-5 years, be my guest. I'm just pointing out you don't have to.

And if you read most reviews, those strollers are great for tooling around a mall. But when you get to uneven pavement, brick streets, stairs, public transportation, etc, they will get eaten up in a year and you will be buying another one. I would prefer to buy one good quality stroller that will last (the one we are getting can also convert to a double) instead of having to purchase multiple strollers. So many people on here that go that route end up buying 2-3 strollers over time.
Yes you don't have to spend half a grand on a stroller, but if it is going to make your life easier, it could be worth it.
I think it really depends on your needs and your budget. We need a jogging stroller, and I was worried about the cost, but I've found models that are only $100 to $150. I think that's going to be the best option for us, but when I originally thought we'd need a "BOB" or something like that, I was also looking into buying used. Play-It-Again Sports has a lot of used joggers for sale, so that would be a good way to save some $ if you really wanted a high-end jogger.
It's just reality that our baby will not be riding in a thousand-dollar stroller, but for families that can afford it and want to spend that much, more power to them. It's not my business what other people spend on baby gear.
We're looking at the BOB, UppaBaby and Phil & Teds, etc. I know we'll end up getting one of them it was just an issue of sticker shock I think. I've never really priced out a stroller prior to being pregnant so I had no clue.
Unfortunately the travel systems won't work for us for a couple of reasons, the wheels on them aren't the best for city stuff (we walk miles every day) and my husband and I are both tall and with the non-adjustable handles we either end up pushing them off to the side or we're constantly kicking the back of the tires as we walk.
I know in our situation it's either shell out the money now for one really good stroller or end up buying multiples over the course of time b/c we aren't happy with any of them.
Same situation. We walk everywhere. I am 5'10", h is 6'5". We went to BBB and tried out a bunch and I *think* we are set on the UppaBaby Vista for the simple fact that it was so easy to fold, was the tallest and adjustable, and because of the ability to add another seat if we have another kid. I am hoping this season's will go on sale this fall when they bring out the new colors. That is what they guy told us at the store.
I had a P3 that crapped out on me and I found a babyjogger city elite on sale at albeebaby. Hands down it was soooo worth the money. It maneuvers so much better than my peg perego travel system, it has so many better features and it such a smoother 'ride'. I agree if you live in the city, plan on doing a lot of walking, etc you should get a good jogging stroller.
Along the same lines as the crib, you will probably use the stroller a good 3+ years especially if you are having more children
Perhaps. I haven't looked.
Though something to consider is if you're going to have another kid in a year or two buying a cheaper one now and then getting a nice double stroller when #2 comes along would be a better option.
That's something we're considering with cribs as well. No point in getting a convertible crib if you don't get to convert it, kwim?

I completely agree with you on this! I live in an area that you never see strollers besides, a Bugaboo, Orbit, Uppababy or a BOB. Now that doesn?t mean I must purchase one of those strollers, but there is a reason people have them in the city we live in. We walk a lot... and I want a stroller that will be great quality along with great wheels and that will grow with our family. My mom actually purchased the Uppavista for us which is probably the least expensive of the urban designed strollers. I am really happy with it. We can add a second seat for when we have another child and even a skate board if we had 3. I would have no need to purchase any other strollers in the future; I feel it is a good investment for our family. I think its all personal opinion.
Lulu: I have been stalking baby sites for 4.5 years while we were trying so the shock value is gone by now but I totally get what you mean. I think you are on the right track and should for sure go with the UPPABaby Vista, would fit your needs perfectly. Yes it is a big cost but do you really want to be trying to shove a $200 travel system down busy city streets and have it to meet your needs?
I know some of my friends think I am crazy for getting a $700 stroller (we are NOT rich) but so many other items are being given to us that it makes sense.
As for Bobs you can find those used everywhere, they are great. I just got one for $100 at a garage sale.
I would definitely keep your eye out for deals on craigs list and at garage sales. All the urban strollers, bugaboo, uppababy, etc. are known to have a good resale value. I have several friends who sold their bugaboo on craigs list when they had a second baby and needed a double stroller. The stroller was only used for a year so it was in very good shape and the buyer paid far less than retail.
We haven't started shopping yet, but after researching, my top 2 choices right now are the Baby Jogger City mini and the uppababy. The BJ City Mini is under $300. That's not too much more than a travel system.
As a city dweller, I agree with the others that it's worth it. We use our car about twice a month. And it's parked 5 blocks from our house. We walk and use public trans to get everywhere, so really buying a stroller for us is like buying a car to a suburbanite.
