oh man... you are one of those! The chance for identical twins is a random thing-- but I think the numbers are 1/250 births are identicals. Fraternals (two eggs released) are the ones that come from your family- and can only come from the moms family as you get your cycles from your mother (who got it from hers and so on).
You don't want twins... and I say that in all seriousness. It is very very hard- not just taking care of two babies, but the risks and complications of pregnancy including prematurity/pre term birth/ low birth weights/ nicu time, infant mortality, TTTS, placental abruption.... multiples make every.single.thing more risky. Of course some women have simple pregnancies with no problems and they are lucky lucky ladies! One baby at a time doesn't out number you, mama!
Thank you for asking! Things for me were rough; I was diagnosed with Hyper-Emesis Gravidarum right away. I started throwing up at 6w, had to have a home IV placed at 7w, and at 12w I had to have a PICC line put in ( a permanent IV that is placed into the top of your heart). I could not stop throwing up- it was up to 15 times a day. It was bad enough that I considered abortion just so I would could stop throwing up. I was sick until I was 22w- sometimes it lasts much longer so in that sense I was lucky. It messed me up physically (I lost 35pounds in 12w) and mentally; obviously my head was not right since I was thinking about aborting them, praying that the HEG would kill me so I wouldn't be sick... it was the most awful thing I have ever experienced. Thank god for Zoloft :-P After the HEG was slowing, I was in the hospital with PTL at 34w and was hooked up to magnesium sulfate which I had an crappy experience with.
They stopped the ctx though and I had a scheduled c/s at 37w1d. The girls were small, 5lb4ox and 4lb13oz but luckily didn't need NICU time. I was really really lucky that I got to keep them in as long as I did. Sp, things for me siggity sucked, but they really could have been much much worse. I know now how lucky I am.
me! i'm having fraternal twins and we don't have twins in our family at all! we were completely shocked! fraternal twins are the ones that are supposed to run in families too!
I have fraternal twin girls and it is the first set of twins on either side of the family. My husband affectionately calls them the "shocker twins" since we were completely shocked when we found out. I was also informed by my OB that since I had spontaneous fraternal twins, I'm more likely to have a multiple pregnancy the next time around.
Well DH is an identical twin but I know that doesn't count for squat.
My OB's rationalization on why we concieved 2: I was finishing breastfeeding DS, so hormones were wild... I was teaching DS to eat solids, which meant a lot of sweet potatoes - the cassava root family has been known to cause hyperovulation... and I am over 30.
Me. Completely shocked to have fraternal twins. Still don't really believe it and they're 13 months old. My pregnancy went well,no problems. I delivered at 36 weeks and my babies came home with me,no NICU.?
Me too. I have ID boys (so we were told - one placenta/almost non-existent membrane).
Just wanted to add that even though I had a very rough pregnancy (bedrest from 18.5 weeks on and 2 months of hospital bedrest) I still believe twins are a blessing and feel so grateful that we were lucky enough to have them.
Oh, I'm not sure about the whole sweet potato theory but I will say I was taking wild yam root capsules and drinking a cup of green tea every day when we conceived our twins. Oh, and I had just tried oysters for the first time. It's a running joke in our families to stay away from the oysters. Hehe.
me. mine were spontanious and are believed to be fraternal. There is no history of multiples in my family but we keep telling everyone it has to start somewhere.
Me! BUT, from what I understand, Identicals are not genetic - only fraternals are genetic, since you release 2 eggs. Nothing really controls an egg splitting.
We have no family history of twins. The doctors said there is a high possibility that they are identical. They share the same placenta. We will not know for sure until they are born and the placenta is tested.
spontaneous fraternal twins here - I was 35 when we got PG so that may have been why but there is no way to tell. If we have more I have a 75% chance of having multiples again but since I had them at 25 weeks I am not sure I want more, going through 82 and 124 days in the NICU was the hardest thing I have ever been though in my life.

LMAO....
Me. My boys are identical. It was the most shocking thing-finding out at the U/S that it was twins--that has ever happened in my life.
You just had them! Congratulations!!!
