Dallas-Fort Worth Babies

anyone's pedi routinely do lead screening?

from asking around, it seems like most DFW pedis don't do routine lead screening. that seems really weird to me. all my friends elsewhere say it is a routine (maybe required?) thing at regular intervals as part of well-baby.

plus, it looks like about every zip code in the metro is on this list from the state. still, maybe it is just our pedi group? most of my friends with LOs using the same practice.

so what's the deal?

Re: anyone's pedi routinely do lead screening?

  • Our pedi does not do lead screening routinely but I asked for it at our one year appt. and she didn't have any issue with doing it. I cited that we live in a home built prior to 1978. The test came back normal.

  • that's basically our situation. we did some remodeling many months back, and it is an older house. our pedi is willing to do it, but the office seemed surprised by my questions about it.
  • Ours does yearly until age 4 I believe. I know my little boy was tested at one, two, and three.
  • One more thing, we go to Pediatric Associates of Dallas, it's standard practice at there.
  • At 12 month appt, pedi asked her normal questions and devel and one of the things at the end of her list was asking us if our house was built before 1978, and if so then he needed to be tested.
  • i'm surprised they didn't automatically do it if you told them you were in an older house. it's pretty much considered standard of care if you live in an older home
  • mrspres, i was surprised too! i think i saw on another post that you use inwood village pediatrics. that's our practice, so maybe they were just having an off day? or maybe it varies from 1 doc to another?

i'm going to ask about it when we're there next week.

it must vary from doctor to doctor but i'm really surprised to hear you say this.

  • Ours does it routinely - we had it done at 9 months.
