Elevated liver enzymes, anyone?

I posted this probably 3-4 months ago. My dr is now a bit more concerned and sending me for a sono. I don't know what in particular is elevated.

Any experience with this?

It seems that it MAY be 'fatty liver' -- thanks IF treatments and PCOS for the weight gain. ??

  • this is why pcos ladies need to get their liver checked annually to make sure liver is functioning well. Rare s/e of metformin is making the elevated liver enzymes worse.

  • Well, I mentioned this below, but when I was in the hospital for my gallbladder, my liver enzymes were extremely elevated. For me, it ended up being attributed to my gallbladder not functioning, and it hadn't been for so long that it was starting to affect my liver's ability to properly function. As soon as my gallbladder was removed, my enzymes normalized.

I know that probably doesn't help you much..however, one of my co-workers is going through this right now as well (the elevated liver enzymes) and hers is not a result of her gallbladder. Her doctor told her it was due to her "fatty liver"...but, from what she said, it isn't from weight or weight gain, just rather how your liver is/reacts/retains...I didn't ask too many questions because once she found out it wasn't her gallbladder, I couldn't be of much help.

I was just about to respond with this same thing. When I was on metformin I was one of the people who's enzymes went all out of whack. Seeing as though you're not on it....I'm no help, lol. Hope the docs figure out what's causing it.

  • My Dh has had higher levels for 4 years... that's right.. 4 years... The dr kept telling him to lose 10 pounds, he never did so he never went back to the dr.  I finally nagged him enough that he went back a few months ago.. still elevated so the dr said he was going to do a liver biopsy.  That scared my dh into joining weight watchers and he has lost 15 pounds... He just had the bloodwork rerun last week and his enzymes are normal.
  • This happened to me a few months ago.  It kept creeping higher and higer and then after a couple months it just suddenly dropped back to the middle of normal range.  My doc said that that happens a lot.  Good Luck with your appt.

  • They are probably doing an right upper quadrant u/s to check your gallbladder because if you have gallstones you can have elevated liver enzymes.

I actually had elevated liver enzymes about 3 years ago when I had Epstein-Barr Virus.  The virus affected my liver and so my enzymes were elevated for awhile. But the liver can actually regenerate itself so my enzymes eventually went down once the virus resolved itself.

    GL to you!
