Where did you deliver?

And what was your experience?

I had my first two at Women's and am not really happy with the level of care I received.  I'd have to switch OBs since mine only delivers at Womens.  I love her but I'm not sure I want to deliver another child at Womens.

Thanks.

Re: Where did you deliver?

  • I delivered at Methodist in the medical center and had a great experience all around though I could tell my OB favors St. Lukes over Methodist. I have zero complaints really other than my L&D nurse was a talker but no big deal at all.

  • I delivered at Memorial Hermann in the Medical Center.  I did have a couple of things that I wasn't happy about - one post partum nurse was rude, and there was a mixup trying to get me a post partum room and getting Dylan back to me from the nursery during the mixup.  But, overall, everything was great, and my labor nurse was FANTASTIC.  I will deliver there again next time.

  • I delivered at Methodist in the Med Center too and had a fabulous experience.  My OB is Dr. Bobo.  I toured St. Luke's this time and decided to go with Methodist again (big rooms, 1 room the entire time and big windows - St. Luke's had some interior L&D rooms - ick!). I am looking forward to another great L&D experience in the coming weeks.

Because of my insurance I will have to deliver at Women's (this is my first).  I am curious about what you didn't like about your experience, if you don't mind sharing.

My 1st:  I ended up with an induction and a semi-emergency Csection and a premature baby.  The NICU nurses (especially the night nurses) were awesome.  However, I delivered at 2:30 in the afternoon and didn?t get my baby in the room till after 10:00 PM.  Both times I don?t think the lactation consultants were very helpful.  They weren?t informative and the nurses actually were more helpful with different holds, etc.   My 2nd: It was a scheduled Csection and my doctor requested they bring the baby to me in recovery.  The nursing staff denied that.  They are supposed to bring the baby to you in the room within 4 hours of delivery.  My OB said they were changing their policy and trying to do it closer to 1 hour.  I had my husband call after 4 hours and they finally brought the baby up.  I had a really bad night nurse.  She checked on me infrequently.  After I requested pain medication it took her over an hour to come back with the shot.  I asked for my sheets to be changed because the hormones make you sweat so much and was told no, they only change them if there is blood.  OH!  And the nurse from the nursery argued with me about keeping the baby in the room.  She said I looked tired!  Of course I looked tired. Thanks PeaceBaby - I can't imagine waiting over an hour for pain meds.  And good to know about LCs - BFing is new and scary and important to me so I'll be sure to look for other resources.

  • St. Luke's/Tx Children's Med Center. Great L&D experience but an absolutely rotten experience with postpartum. I don't recommend it.
  • I had 2 perfectly good experiences at Womens.

  • Methodist, and had a great experience with an emergency c/s.

This baby will be delivered at St Lukes. Even though we're trying for a VBAC, in case I end up with another c/s, I prefer St Luke's policies.  If the doc declares you healthy and the baby is doing fine, they don't even take the baby out of the OR.

Methodist has a one hour observation period after c/s, but if you're insistent, they're flexible on that.

  • I delivered at Methodist Sugar Land and had a great experience. We asked to change post partum rooms because ours was next to the nurses station and we heard everyone calling all hours of the night and we were moved immediately. The next morning the woman in charge of the floor came by to ask about my experience, to see how she could make it better, and to see that all issues were addressed.

The nurses were all fabulous and the food was pretty good too.  ;-)

  • I delivered at Memorial Hermann Med Center and had an excellent experience overall.  I love love love my OBGYN and this is where she delivers, so any future babies will also be delivered there .

My only complaint would be that I felt that some of the postpartum nurses could have been more supportive/helpful when it came to breast feeding.

  • I delivered at Willowbrook Methodist.  Loved both my L&D and postpartum nurses. The only compliant was there was some confusion once I was moved to my room from recovery due to shift change and my husband had to find a nurse to get me water and ice when the room should have been prepared.

  • I delivered at Women's and have since switched OBs and will be delivering at St. Luke's. The night nurses at Women's seemed to be terrible communicators with each other. They always passed the buck, "The next nurse will do this." "What? The nurse before me was supposed to do that." Not helpful. When I was ready to be discharged, a nurse told me she couldn't discharge me because she had to wait on a wheelchair. Mere seconds later, my mom returned with a wheelchair that was parked at the nurses' station, along with several others.

My experience, combined with a lack of trust in my previous OB, meant I was switching doctors and hospitals for this go round. We'll see how it goes!

Nope, a V. I had my sorority big with me who is getting her PhD as a L&D nurse and teaches at UT so I didn't care too much but if she wasn't there, I would have smacked the nurse that night. She was sweet but a talker and I just didn't want to chat during contractions....

  • FWIW, I regularly work at Methodist (med center), Methodist Willowbrook and St Joseph.  I've had patients with issues at all of them, and patients without issues at all as well.  The experience is about the same no matter what major hospital you choose in Houston....sometimes it just takes one person to color the experience in a good or bad way.  The Methodist / Memorial Hermann / St Luke systems are all pretty equivalent.  Each facility has its own quirks.

The most important thing (besides trusting your OB) is communicating with the staff.  You have to be your own advocate.  Nurses and support staff can be busy and overwhelmed.  Sometimes (hopefully rarely) they are just lazy.  If you aren't satisfied with an aspect of your care, tell somebody (the charge nurse, the house supervisor, your OB).  If they don't know there is a problem, they cannot fix it.  I am always grateful when a patient tells me about a bad experience; that is the only way I can go through my channels to help fix it for future patients.

  • A night nurse named V.  Hhmmm I don't know them so well but I think there's only one V.  Sorry she was such a chatty one.  Some of the day nurses are pretty chatty too.

Yes, I get that.  And we did speak up.  Especially the 2nd time.  I guess I just feel like two strikes, you know?  I can communicate with my OB but she can't do much about the nursing staff at Womens.  I think when I go in for my annual I'll tell her my concerns and feel her out.  If I'm still not comfortable I'm going to consider Methodist & St. Luke's.

I didn't read your 2nd post.  So that wasn't directed at you whatsoever.  It was more of a general public service announcement from someone who works in medicine.  Sorry you had crappy experiences.

  • I had a fantastic experience at Womens....in fact, I credit the suportive staff and the on-call doc for me being able to have a vaginal delivery rather than a csection.

  • I delivered at Women's (scheduled c/s) and had a great experience.  I had one LC that left me feeling a little uncomfortable, but I called for another one the next day and she was great!  I also loved the baby nurse overnight on the first and last nights there.  She is actually the one who helped me with BFing.

Ditto, wonderful experiences both times (both vaginal, one with drugs, one without).
  • #1 - Memorial Hermann, Katy

    #2 - Methodist, Willowbrook

Both scheduled c-sections, both wonderful expriences

I know which one you are talking about.  When we checked in, she was our nurse, but then they called in an off-duty nurse because they were so busy.  V was the head nurse that night.
