DS qualifies for ECI

I posted a while back about DS possibly needing speech help because our pedi was concerned about DS' lack of spoken words. He referred us to ECI and we were told there are two ways DS could qualify: 1) hearing loss or 2) being at least 3 months behind developmentally. Well we took DS to TSD earlier this month for a hearing test, and he passed. (I really didn't think anything was wrong with his hearing... he can hear me, he just chooses not to listen sometimes. Stick out tongue)

Today the ECI specialists came and observed him. They determined that he does qualify because he is behind on "expressive" development. From what DH gathered that is the verbal development. On all other aspects he did pretty well. He did measure a little behind on motor skills (20 months) but only because we don't have stairs so they couldn't observe his skills there. He is ahead cognitively though. I knew his big head was harboring a big brain. Wink All in all, a good appointment. While it is hard for me to think that there is something "wrong" with my son, I know it's for the best.

Mom to an almost 4 y/o and an almost 2 y/o. In process of growing our family through adoption.

This would be the things he says orally (or doesn't say). The other thing they maybe have talked about is "receptive" language development (the things he understands- i.e., following directions).

Jack was the same way. He could understand far more than he could express, so he also qualified for Speech/Language. Best thing that ever happened to him and now, just over a year later, he's a talkin' machine.

  • ECI is exactly the time to help them along a little. You're definitely doing what's best for him right now and in no time he will be an expressive machine :)

That's great! :) Makes me feel even better. One thing the ECI specialists did notice was that Truman is an independent child, enjoys doing things on his own. They said sometimes the independent children don't "feel" like talking because they can do it themselves. Maybe that was your Jack, too? lol

  • We have been so pleased with ECI. Wyatt went from not sitting on his own (at 8.5 months) to sitting and then army crawling in a 6 week span. He has even crawled on his hands and knees a bit in the last few days. Mason gets speech therapy through them and he is making huge progress too. He couldn't hear before so obviously that makes a big difference, but they have given us strategies to use to teach him how to use language to express himself. It's amazing how fast they catch up!
