Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding and bottles...

With DD, I waited too long to introduce the bottle and by the time we did, she refused to take it. We went strait from bf'ing to sippy cups.

With DS, I plan on mainly bf'ing while introducing the bottle after a week or 2.  We are planning (but this could change!) to bottlefeed 1 nightly feeding and then sometimes DH would take a feeding in the evening as well. He felt a bit left out with DD....so I have agreed.

I am trying to research the best bottles for newborns, that will work best with a breastfed baby. Any opinions? Does it matter? I have not found much online.

 TIA!

  • It really depends on each baby, but DS has no problems going back and forth from bottle to breast and we use the Dr. Brown's natural flow vent air bottles.

  • We had bottle acceptance issues, and Tommee Tippee was the wonder bottle that worked. The top is huge and soft like a milkie boobie and DS really likes it! Now he get's half bottle feeds and half boobs and has no problem with either.

  • DS also has no issues going from breast to bottle and vice versa.  But - he may be the exception since he started on bottles only for 6 weeks while I EPed.  I use Avent bottles with wide nipples.

I would vote for keeping it simple and starting with whatever bottles are compatible with your pump.  There is no one bottle that works for everyone, so why not start there?

  • We introduced a bottle to DS at 2 weeks old so that DH could give a feeding a day and I started pumping to get a stash going. We tried the Medela bottles that came with my pump but they seemed to be too fast for DS, and he got really gassy it seemed those few days we used them. We had some Dr Browns from a shower and have used those ever since....no problems so far! Some people complain there are too many parts to these bottles, but we dont find it to be a big problem.

  • I stared 1 bottle a day at a week and a half.  DH did the bottle for 1 night feeding, so I could sleep.  We never had any issues with nipple confusion or bottle refusal.  I use Dr. Brown's, but I don't think it matters.  We also held LO in a sitting up position and held the bottle horizontal, so the milk wouldn't just drip into her mouth and she actually had to suck and work for it (like with BFing).
