toddler naps

What is your toddler's nap regimen? Joss still takes 2 naps per day, although her second one doesn't always last as long as it use to. Her schedule has never been ideal, but it has worked beautifully and she always sleeps through the night like a champ. During the week her daycare class takes a nap from 12-1, then she naps when she gets home around 5:00. This always seemed really late to me, esp since she often sleeps 1.5-2hrs at this time, pushing dinner until 7pm and bedtime until 8:30-9pm. I hate feeding her and putting her to bed so late, plus the fact that she is up only 1.5-2hrs between nap and bedtime, but I admit it has worked beautifully and we've been reluctant to try to switch things up since she goes to bed and STTN with no problems. I don't know that the daycare nap alone is enough, but we've thought about trying to keep her up when she gets home, then feeding her and putting her to bed early. We're just afraid to mess up her nighttime at the risk of having her wake up earlier. Do we leave things alone for now since it's working?

  • Around that age, Ellie was doing the same thing.  She still needed two naps a day, but only got the one at daycare.  She eventually outgrew the evening nap and still goes to bed a little early.  Usually at 7:30-8.

  • Paige takes a nap at daycare from 12-3 (if she wakes up earlier she does crafts, but she usually sleeps the whole time!).

On the weekends, she seems to get really tired around 10am, so we let her take a nap. She usually sleeps until 1pm. Still a 3-hour nap, just earlier.

I have a feeling we're just more boring than daycare. :-)

  • Jocelyn is a little older than Tyson, but he still averages 2 naps per day.

Occasionally, he'll take a really long morning nap (for us that's 1.5 hr+), he won't take an afternoon nap.  Most often, he takes one nap in the morning (45min-1hour) and then a second, shorter nap in the late afternoon (30-45min).

Honestly, we've never had a set nap schedule.  He sleeps when he's tired during the day, but he always goes to bed for the night at the same time.  He's been a pretty good nighttime sleeper (*knocks on wood*) for a while now, so we've never felt the need to stress specific nap times.

We're the same way at home on the weekends.  Depending on what we're doing, she'll even take two naps!  haha.

  • L goes back and forth with a late nap.  Like you say it works and she sleeps well at night.  She won't do it forever so we go with it.
  • Andrew has outgrown 2 naps but seems a little young for one.  We're kind of stuck right now!

He goes to bed generally at 8-7 (or later), then naps at 11:30.  He would nap earlier if I let him (like 9:30-10) but then it's anyone's guess if he would take a 2nd nap. If he did, he would be up very late, if he didn't, he'd be way overtired by bedtime.  So we're stretching him to one, long nap at 11:30. He generally passes out at 11:30 and 8 because he's tired.

If he gets behind on sleep we let him catch him and take 2 naps as needed.

  • Jake naps from 12:30 to 3 now everyday.  It's the schedule at daycare and we keep it at home.  It's a blessing to have a set time, and a curse as well.  We'll be struggling to make that time work with some of our upcoming plans.
