Babies: 6 - 9 Months

so i tried putting him to bed later so he'd sleep later

but he decided to wake up at 130 and stay up 'til 3. then he was up for the day at 550. hmmmm.... maybe he was just adjusting and tonight will work better? whatcha think?

Re: so i tried putting him to bed later so he'd sleep later

  • I think if you want him to sleep later, you have to move everything later, including meals, naps, etc., and do it gradually, like in 15 minute intervals.

  • I've read that when you try to keep them awake, they get overtired and release a chemical in their brain that says "stay awake" - and they end up not sleeping well at all that night, so it kind of contradicts what you're trying to do in the first place.... I learned that the hard way a few months ago!
  • We have the opposite. He goes down between 9:30-10:00, & everyone kept telling us that was too late [even though he would sleep until 7:00]. So we shifted meals, naps, etc & tried getting him to bed earlier.

For a whole week he woke up at 3:30am. Went back to old schedule, slept fine.

I'm not messing with a good thing.

thanks for the feedback. meals were moved 20 minutes later as was bedtime. i'm not touching his nap times because i put him down when he's tired- which isn't necessarily the same time everyday.

i remember hearing this too! i attempted to do it gradually but maybe it still made him overtired. hmmm....

  • Yeah, I've learned that one the hard way, too!

DS usually goes to bed at 7ish, but last night I didn't get him down 'til 9, and he was SO overtired that he didn't fall asleep 'til 9:30, and then was up again at 10:15. Then wide awake at 1:30...and 5...I finally got him back down for a short bit, but that only lasted 'til 7. And now he SHOULD be napping, but he's talking to himself instead. It's going to be a loooong day!

  • We have tried all the tricks that I have heard of to get LO to sleep later and it doesn't matter what we do he still wakes up at the same time everyday.
  • Ebee works the opposite way. The earlier she goes down, the better and longer she sleeps.

  • The best thing I ever did was start putting Noah down earlier than normal. He sleeps better and longer in the morning. Before when I was putting him down at 7:30-8:00 he'd wake during the night and start his day at 5:30 and be a cranky mess. Now, he goes down at 6:30 and sleeps through the night and wakes between 7-7:30. I really found the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Healthy Child helpful.

    Good luck!

I would strongly suggest ordering "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by Marc Weissbluth.  It is a wonderful book that helps you to understand the importance of baby's sleep.

One of the main topics it touches on is the importance of never letting them get overtired.  Being overtired can make them resist sleep and when they do finally fall asleep, the quality isn't as good.

this!!  i read they will wake the same time regardless how late you put them down, really it is only hurting you because then you have to deal with the overtiredness.  the other night P was ready to go to bed by 6:45 pm, couldn't keep her eyes open!  DH said it was to early to put her down, but i disagreed and put her to bed.  she slept until 6:30 am.....this is the usual time she wakes up.

i tend to think they have their own sleep cycles, no matter how hard you try to change it, it will stay the same.

  • My LC gave us a sheet on sleep.  One of things I remembered is that it said sleep begets sleep - the earlier they go to bed, the longer and better they'll sleep.  I have noticed this to be true - when we're out and naps get pushed around, he doesn't sleep as well for the rest of the day.

Same here....DS goes to bed no later than 7pm most nights and sometimes he has even gone to bed at 550pm.  He STTN and usually gets up between 6-7am so I'm not complaining.

This is exactly the case with us.  Yesterday morning I had to run some errands so DS didn't get a real nap in the morning.  He refused to nap the rest of the day making for one miserable day for both of us!
