Thoughts on Elle?

DH mentioned that he likes Elle for a girl, and it's slowly starting to grow on me.  I kind of feel like it's more of a nick name than an actual first name.  Do you think Elle stands alone?  If not, what are some names that Elle can be a nick name for?  Ellen and Eliana are out.  Any other ideas?

Re: Thoughts on Elle?

  • I think it's great as a stand-alone.  Very classy name, although it is becoming pretty popular.

  • It can stand alone. However, I don't like it. I agree that it seems incomplete or like a nn. I'm not a huge fan of one syllable first names in general though.

I love Eliana! Since that one is out though, the only other one I can think of at the moment is Eleanor.

SSA lists it at 442.  Do you have a different list you're going by?  Just curious, because I really want to avoid a trendy name.

  • I also think it is more of a nickname. All I can think of is Eleanor, Ella, Elisheva, and Eliana, but I know that's out. As far as popularity, I don't think Elle by itself is particularly popular, but names like Ella, Emma, Ellie are kind of becoming a trend kwim?

  • I kind of lump it in with Ella/Bella/Isabelle/Isabella.  Those names as a group are incredibly popular.  Elle is my favorite out of the bunch right now since it is less common.  Eleanor/Ellie is moving up the charts, too.

  • *Sigh* you ladies are right.  I'm kidding myself to think that just because the given name "Elle" is 442 means that the nn is not incredibly trendy right now.

    Back to the drawing board...

  • You'll always get nothing short of honest feedback here.  ;)  If you love a name, though, you should stick with it.  Also, no need to rush - you've got plenty of time to pick names!

Oh I know there's LOTS of time.  I'm not really in a rush, although I do feel that at the rate we are going, we will NEVER agree on a girl's name.

We agreed to stop discussing names until after our big u/s, but that doesn't stop me from thinking about them and researching them!

Hopefully it will be a boy, because we are in total agreement on our boy pick.

  • I agree with others on the super popular thing, but I like it all the same...but only as a nn for a more formal name. If we were having a girl, she'd be Elise (nn Ellie or Elle).

  • Cute nn, but I prefer longer names with options for girls.  A top contender on my name list was Eliana, I was planning on nn her either Elle or Elli depending on what stuck

  • I just named my DD Isabel and my mom calls her Elle. I think it's cute either as a standalone or a nn.

  • Love it on its own...  and like it so much better than Ellie
  • Snore. Everyone's doing it now. The Emma/Ella brigade (and derivatives) is everywhere. Also, I think it's abrupt, like you were starting to say something but were cut off.

If you're deadset on it, any name that starts with an EL sound can be shortened to Elle.

  • its pretty, its also the name of the original girl from Criminal Minds. it is also short for Elizabeth, Helen, Elena, Eloise. I have a book with all nick names and what they are short for =)
  • Not a huge fan, and I'm so sick of names that start with El-.
  • NMS. I'm so over Elle, Ella, Isabella, Gabriella, etc.

I really like it.  It's on my short list, too.  I think Ella is overdone, but I don't know any little girls named Elle.  I know they're extremely similiar but I still love Elle--sounds pretty and classy to me :)
  • I consider it more of a nickname than a full name.  I like it as a nickname for Gabrielle.
  • it's a stand alone name.
  • I love it! I'm a Maggie by birth so I've grown up everyone asking me "is that your REAL name?"... I have always love saying "yes... yes it is. It's just Maggie". I think Elle is a great name for a child and an adult. works great!

I think too often we worry about what our kids will have to go through based on their name. It's just a name, and if they have to correct people their entire lives then great! It means they're a bit different than everyone else, and they'll be a little easier to remember. I think it's cool. go with it if you want!

  • Personally I love Elle.

Classic. Classy. Stands alone. Love it :)

  • I love it, and I think it stands alone.

  • I think Elle stands alone well. Are you adverse to nicknames for it? Like if someone started calling her Ellie? That would be my knee-jerk reaction. But then again, I call DD Ellie as a derivative for Gabrielle, so maybe I'm just predisposed to it!! :) FWIW - I also call DD Elle sometimes.
