Milk protein allergy (second try)

So my pediatrician recently put me on a dairy free diet.

A little background, my son has had two occurrences of blood in his stool. The first time, which happened a month ago, was determined to be an anal fissure. The second time, which happened last Thursday, my pedi could not find a fissure, so she advised me to go off dairy.

Before omitting dairy my son was a pretty happy little guy, fussy like any other baby, but usually pretty calm and happy. Ever since going off dairy his poop has been more watery, he is extremely fussy, and not nearly as smiley. I am so frustrated and part of me wants to really abandon this diet.

Has anyone had this experience or have any insight???

TIA!!!! Have a good night!

Re: Milk protein allergy (second try)

  • Oh, I should also add that my little guy was not in distress when the blood was in his stool, in fact it seems his tummy bothers him more now being off dairy than before.

In addition, I don't like meat, so dairy is where I get most of my protein, it has always made up a bug part of my diet.

     Thanks again!!! :)

I went dairy and soy free, and have seen an improvement in LO.  Dairy was a HUGE part of my diet, and I'm still trying to adjust.

  • I am on a dairy free diet due to LO's reflux, but my experience has been positive.  Sorry I am no help.  I hope you get it figured out soon.

FWIW there are tons of ways to get protein without meat & dairy.  I've been meat free my whole life and dairy free almost 10 years.  You need around 45 grams of protein a day, so if you're eating a well balanced diet you're probably getting it without knowing.  Try adding tofu/seitan/soy milk/chickpeas/lentils/nuts/peanut butter/brown rice/whole grains

Google vegan recipes & substitues, there are tons out there.  Being dairy free doesn't mean you have to suffer at all & once you get adjusted to it, it's easy peasy.

  • I cut out dairy and soy, but mu son was very fussy and gassy before. It has made a big positive improvement in his fussiness. What you're describing isn't what inexperienced at all (w/ the exception of the blood in the stool- ww had that too).

  • It surprises me that your pediatrician didn't test a stool sample before suggesting you go off dairy.  Ours tested LO stool before suggesting that I cut dairy.
