Babies: 0 - 3 Months

What do you wish someone had brought to the hospital?

BFF is being induced tomorrow (at 41.5 weeks) and I would like to bring them something when I go to visit after baby is born.

What do you wish someone had brought you or what did someone bring for which you were grateful?

I don't want to bring flowers or balloons or anything that is going to take up a lot of space in their car, but I would feel bad if I showed up empty-handed.

TIA for your suggestions.

Re: What do you wish someone had brought to the hospital?

  • honestly NOTHING.

I wish people hadn't brought things. They started to pile up and then we had to cart it all home.

I learned that going through my labor and I will never bring anything to the hospital again. I will drop it off once they are home.

That being said, my hospital had great food. If theirs doesn't, it might be nice to bring her a meal. But for us, it was annoying because people kept bringing food but we couldn't eat it all.

One of our close friends showed up really early the next morning with a box of doughnuts, some coffee for DH, and a paper from the day before (the day DS was born).  It was really sweet, and we were grateful for the coffee and doughnuts (so were the nurses that we shared with)!  Other than that, the things people brought were very nice, but just one more thing we had to cart home with us.  I'd probably have preferred if they just waited until we were home.

  • We didn't have family here since we live away from home due to the Navy so no one visited us in the hospital. We did have a friend watch our dogs for us and she decorated our apartment and I had NO clue she was doing that! It made me cry because I totally didn't expect it.

  • I got nice baby gifts, but I would have liked some flowers or balloons.  My mom brought them to my house when I got home and I mentioned I was a little disappointed no one brought them to the hospital.  She said the same thing about thinking it would take too much space, but I felt my room was kinda unfestive

  • Thanks ladies.  I think I will stick to food.  I don't want to give them anything to worry about carting home.

This.  We had bags and bags of stuff that DH had to make multiple trips to the car.  Very annoying when all you want to do is get out of the hospital and on your way home with your LO.

I actually would've enjoyed getting food while in the hospital.  My hospital had decent food, but I would've really liked a big ol' plate of sushi.  And I know DH could've definitely used many giant cups of coffee.

    food!  Stick out tongue

I second this!!! Because honestly my fat ass is not use to the small portions they give at the hospital. haha

  • My friend brought me my favorite dessert.  It was great!

  • Food for sure. The hospital meals were mediocre at best.

  • A People magazine.  Foods a good idea, I on the other hand lost my appetite all together after giving birth...didn't get it back for a month.
  • I loved everyone who brought me food! Bring her favorite treat and I love the idea of a newspaper from the day the baby is born, what a great keepsake!
  • Granola bars or fruit - something healthy.  We had canned veggies at the hospital and iceberg salad...gross.  I would make a couple of meals for the family and drop them off while they are in the hospital, including one they can make the night they get home from the hospital.

  • Why don't you offer to take some of their stuff home for them and take them something when you drop it off?  If you have to take something, take a box to put flowers in- we forgot this and had to prop them up in the cargo area and pray they didn't tip.  We remembered everything else though!  (Also, extra paper bags are nice to have, we remembered them but in case she doesn't- they stand up on their own and hold more than plastic bags.)
  • I loved having balloons and flowers at the hospital to brighten up the room and didnt mind carting them home. If you know there's some food she's been craving that she hasn't been able to have, you could bring that too, but coordinate it with her DH.

  • Something sweet...like a cupcake!
  • My best friend and sister made me an edible arrangement. They dipped the fruit in chocolate and coconut. It was soooo good! It was nice too because if others stopped in they could try some as well. There was a fridge there and the nurse just gave us a ziploc to keep in the fridge so we had it the whole time I was there.
  • I liked that people sent flowers and balloons to our house instead of the hospital. When my sister had my niece, we had to cart that all home and it was a pain.

My work did send an amazing fruit basket for us though which was awesome for when I got hungry in the middle of the night! I went through and washed it all when it arrived and just grabbed an apple or orange or some grapes whenever I wanted a snack!

  • Some good food!!! Hospital food = YUCK! :)
