Will and Dash are taunting me with their almost-but-not-quite sleeping through the night.
These days they'll go for around 7 hours between feeds at night, and about 5-5.5 of those hours are actual sleep. Last night they stretched it even further, eating at 9pm, asleep by 10.30pm, and awake at 5am to eat. I've arbitrarily decided that when they sleep through until 6am, I'm declaring STTN victory (why 6am? just because that's the actual start of "real morning" in my book as opposed to"holy shiznit it's early in the freaking morning"). Oh, and after the 5am feeding, they went back to sleep, then woke up again at 8am - not because they're hungry, but just because they like their day to start at 7.30-8am.
Anyway, achieving STTN seems a little tricky to me because they don't eat at the same time every night before they go to bed. They go for anywhere from 4-5 hours between feedings during the day, so their night feed is anytime between 6.30-9.30pm (depending on what their eating pattern was like the rest of the day), which means they go to bed anytime between 8-11.30pm, both of which determine when they wake up in the morning. How do you get them to eat dinner and into bed at the same time every night if they're not always hungry at the same time every evening? It doesn't seem like it should be that complicated, but somehow it's mystifying me lol!
Re: STTN...so close and yet so far...
Technically, yes. Just not in my book.
they are better sleepers than miss A!!!
well, before our trip to
NC she was sleeping 7-8 hrs and waking every morning between 6-8am and
i was sooo happy but then we went away for a week and came back and
things haven't been the same since! i routinely wake between 4-6am now
(sometimes with another waking around 1-2am) and she'll eat and go back
to bed, but i'm still tired by the interrupted sleep!
as far as how to get them to bed the same time every night i am not sure. like W+D, A will eat at different times every night since i feed her on demand during the day. i do find, however, that once it gets towards bedtime that she will nurse whenever i give her the boob...so even though she isn't "hungry" at the same time every night i'm still able to achieve a general bed time w/her. does that make sense? (have you tried offering them a bottle and seeing if they will take it? maybe if you get into a routine they will?) she is generally tired and ready for a nap around 6-8pm and i usually feed her right before then... then i let her sleep til she wakes up, or until about 9-9:30 depending on what i'm doing. then i wake her up and instead of being up for her usual 2 hrs before getting sleepy again, we just do our bedtime routine (bath, PJs, book, nurse, then sleep) and then she is down for the night around 10-11pm. i find that putting her to sleep any earlier and she is up around the 12-2am hour.
oh and congrats on getting them to STTN by the strict sense of the term

We're really pretty lucky that they've always been good sleepers. Don't get me wrong, we've had our fair share of feeding them every 3 hours during the night, but they've never been overly fussy about napping and night sleeping, and tend to sleep fairly soundly once they go to sleep. (Well, Dash did spend about 3 weeks screaming for a solid hour every night before going to sleep, but once we hit on the dishwasher white noise, he zonked out without a fuss.) We've had other problems with them, but as far as sleeping goes, we're REALLY lucky!
I've tried offering their bottles before they're ready, and they're just not interested. They'll kind of absentmindedly mouth the bottle nipple, but won't actually suck, so I think I don't have any choice but to go with whatever schedule they determine for the night. (I might be able to convince Will to eat a bit, but then they'd end up on different eating/sleeping schedules and that is just NOT happening lol!)
