Yikes! Competitive Moms!

Ok...I'm going to admit, I've very competitive, but that's just how my family is....everything, I mean...everything is a competition.  We have family olympics every summer.  And we don't even win anything other than bragging rights.  But we just love to win!

With that said, I started Emmy in gymnastic classes and she's finally going twice a week, today was the first Tuesday she's ever been to.  Well, I get there and it's totally different from Saturday because the gymnastic girls team is practicing.  I think the age range for this time slot is 5-7.  So I sit down and say "wow!  this is totally different from Sat..these girls are great!"  The mom next to me just rolls her eyes and says she hates it, and that when she watches all she sees are the mistakes that her daughter makes.  Then she turns to the lady next to her to see if she agrees and she does.  They just gave off a really bad vibe!

I mean..these 5-7 yo girls were doing these double back flips with whatever you call those other flips.  I would be over the moon if Emmy ever did a cartwheel, and just forgot it if she ever did one back flip at 5!!

I honestly think it's one thing to be competitive and want your kids to be perfect and be great/ #1, it's another when you can't even enjoy them grow, learn, and develop.

Way to be a supportive mom. I'm glad all she does is see the mistakes her kid makes. She should start a savings account for the therapy her daughter will need later in life since she can never please her mother. Shesh!

  • Your post title cracked me up.  When Sarah used to go to a toddler class at one of those small children's gyms, there was a mom there that my friend and I nicknamed "Competitive Mom."

Before I got married and had children I went to several of my nephew's soccer games.  It's a great thing for the kids to win and of course they do want to win each game they play.  That said, I couldn't believe how some of the parents acted.  They would get all red in the face and scream at the kids.  I think the kids were maybe 6 years old.  I thought it was completely ridiculous.  Seriously?  It's soccer and it's supposed to be fun and teach them confidence and team sports skills.  You'd have thought they were getting ready for the World Cup.

I think there will always be parents like that.  There are probably children who respond well to that kind of pressure, but I'd imagine the majority do not.

  • It's amazing how some parents are!  In Abbie's old ballet class we were leaving after Sat. class one day and I heard one of the moms say to her 4year old, "no, we are not getting ice cream because you weren't pointing your toes like a good ballerina like we practiced."  I was beyond shocked - the kid was 4!!!  Give me a break!

  • There was one mom in one of the Sat class (Super tots - beginners for 3.5-4.5 yo) that started screaming at her daughter in front of everyone because she needed to go potty.  She said to her daughter "stop playing around, I'm spending too much money for you to be wasting it".  Granted..it's one thing if the kid had to go potty every 5 mins or something and you can tell they're just wanting to go potty to get out of doing stuff.  But it was her first time asking to go potty like 30 mins into the session.
