It's a form of Marc and is popular in other countries but not here. My husband suggested it because there's some soccer player with that name and we like Derek but we weren't sure if we wanted to repeat the D b/c our first son is with a D. Is Marek a weird name or just seems it because I'm not familiar with it?
Re: What do you think of the name Marek?
I so love it!!
The only thing, and I swear like nobody will ever know this off the top of their head, Marrick (assuming Marek is pronounced the same) is the last name of the elephant man (hell, if you even know who that is).
I know this stupid useless information and I'd still use it as a first name.
I LOVE this name! it was on my top 3 until DH vetoed it. I was going to use it for a girl and spell it Merik (because my name is Keri M.)
I still dream of using it!
my first thought was the old 80s movie (the watcher in the woods) with bette davis, and the girl was named karen, and there was some scary voice saying her name backwards: "nerak, nerak"...
so i don't think i like it. if i had to use it, though, i'd spell it merrick.
I love it!
Then again, I'm Polish, and we tend to name boys Jarek, Darek, or Marek.
I married into a Polish family and we have a few Marek's - I love the name
that is the last name of The Elephant Man. only spelled differently. i immediately get his image in my head. if you don't know who that is here's link to an image. yikes!

It seems fine but it does remind me of the Merrick dog food company.
I think your son will have to correct every teacher he has.
not a huge fan of weird spelled names..
My husband is from Poland so we know TONS of Mareks (including his little brother). We're going to use it as a middle name in honor of my father - Mark - and his brother - Marek.
Btw, when Polish people pronounce this name, it doesn't sound how English speakers say it - the r is rolled almost to a d sound. It sounds like - Mah-dek. I like it pronounced both ways - Mare-rek or Mah-dek, that's why I'm find using it!
This is exactly the first thing I thought of!
I think more people would think of Elephant Man than you would think.
like the merrick spelling better...but love the name. it is on my list.
